Where are you off next?

Post by yick »

Off to Peru in January but because I love going from place to place. I will probably stay there a few years and move somewhere else but it will be South America because I have freedom of movement to live where I want in South America though if the UK gets back in the EU by the time I am an old man and I have my health and the energy, I will go to Spain but for the time being for the next 20 years, it will be between...

Lima, Peru
Ibague, Colombia
Jundiai, Brazil
Iquique, Chile (I was there this year, it was ace!)
Salta, Argentina

@yick: not sure if this was a question. If so, I return to Spain from Buenos Aires in mid August, then that same day to Belgrade to get out of Schengen zone because I almost used my 90 days of tourist visa in spring. Then wait in Serbia until September, to ensure more than 90 days out of Schengen, then hiking in Bulgaria in the autumn, then back to USA for bicycle touring in the winter desert, then February taking care of business in USA, then back to Spain.

Real question is next summer. Hopefully, war will be over by then, but rumor is there will be a civil war in Kyiv after war ends between competing factions of Azov neo-nazis, so I might have to wait until summer 2027 for situation to be calm and safe. Russia should be able to cut a deal with Ukrainians ex-soldiers willing to turn against NATO and then arm them so they can exterminate the Azov nazis.

Yep! It was a question and thanks for answering! So, is Spain-Bulgaria-Serbia and the Ukraine your permanent cycle of places to go to? Do you think you will ever have a permanent base such as Spain? I would like Spain myself but it will have to wait until I am retired but I will probably do it when the UK rejoins the EU which it should in the next twenty years.

Which part of Spain do you like the most? I like up in the north west of Spain, Castilla y Leon, Santander and Cantabria but also like Extremadura and Andalucia. Love also the Basque Country, if I could afford San Sebastian then I would.

I don't think the ex-Soviet shitshow will be over any time soon, a pity as here in China a return flight from Beijing to Moscow is something like 400 dollars.

Will Argentina ever become part of the routine?

My long term plan was springtime hiking in the mountains of Spain (south and east), summer in Kyiv, autumn hiking in mountains of Bulgaria, winter in Kyiv, with 2 weeks stays in Serbia to deal with the 90/180 tourist visa rules until I get permanent residency in Ukraine, and occasional trips to the USA to take care of business affairs there (especially to maintain residency for banking and driver's license purposes and get passport renewed).

If Kyiv never recovers, then I might make Paris my summer/winter home. Easy to get residency in France for USA citizens with passive retirement income. Moscow is another possibility for summer/winter home but not as easy to get residency in Russia currently as Ukraine and France. Advantages of France and Ukraine are that they are less likely to become unlivable due to global warming than Spain. I could replace hiking in Spain with hiking in those countries if warming really bad. Russia is even better positioned with regards to global warming.

Permanent residency means tax residency and I want to avoid that in Spain because of the wealth tax and the global warming issue. Permanent residency in France would be better because special USA France tax treaty allows me to pay France exactly what I would pay USA rather than using French tax rules. As USA citizen, I always pay greater of USA and foreign tax and USA typically lower. Ukraine tax is slightly higher than USA currently but that could change. Russia tax is slightly lower than USA and unlikely to change much.

Summer/winter home might eventually become year round home if and when I can't hike due to bodily problems, such as injury or old age, so I need to consider climate in summer. Good reason to avoid Spain as permanent home.

Wherever I get a permanent home, I'll probably get a girlfriend. Moscow is currently best for paid young sugar babies and Kyiv should be good again once war ends. Paris and Buenos Aires would be good for regular girlfriends in their 40s or well-preserved 50s, who probably end up costing almost as much as the sugar baby because of all the restaurant meals they demand. Voyager1 avoids spending money on girlfriends by admitting he's broke from day 1 and they can easily see he's telling the truth, whereas women would quickly detect I'm lying if I pretended to be penniless. Obviously, Voyager1's method causes many women to immediately walk off, but if he tries enough, he'll eventually find one who doesn't care that he's broke and living in a flop house.

Argentina requires cross Atlantic flight and that might become a problem in the future due to climate change, terrorism, economic collapse, etc. So I would prefer to stay in Europe where bus travel is always possible, though bus trips are long and unpleasant between Eastern and Western Europe. I'm enjoying my stay here in Buenos Aires, but I'm on something of a mission here, because of intense tango dancing at clubs most afternoon and practicing with my professional practice partner every Monday. I haven't really digested the idea of making Argentina my permanent home. Probably not. Argentina has a very high income tax for someone like me. Rather than pay that, I would use the same money to do what it takes to get Russian residency. There are ways to get residency in Russia for those with money.

War won't go on more than a few more years, so that's not a long-term problem. Russia will come out a big but exhausted victor, Europe the big loser, USA will be kicked back to its impregnable North American fortress, China will dominate most of the world. Big risk for permanent home in Moscow is that Moscow becomes frightfully expensive, like back in 2007. This is why I was planning on Kyiv. But anyway, no need to make decisions now. I speak all of French, Spanish and Russian, so languages not a problem in the countries I've mentioned.
