Nothing to do with foreigners and sex tourism - they're just a symptom of a country that is poor, corrupted and has little to no opportunities for working class women, like a lot of Latin America.

Fix the corruption and work towards a better future - something the South Koreans did - then foreigners (GI's in the case of South Korea) disappear and the prostitution will be reduced to local men.

For as much as I admire Filipino women for the strength, resilience and dedication to their loved ones, I can't agree with you putting all foreigners into the same box.

I have been living in the Philippines, on an expat job in Entertainment City, Pasay, and I have been managing some 80 staff, 60+ of whom were Filipino women and men. I might have not been in the county for very long, but my job allowed, indeed forced me, to develop an understanding of your culture and how to best interact with it quickly.

Sure, there are quite a few foreigners who go to the Philippines expecting to get a harem of cute if clueless, subservient young female pets who will attend to their every whim, including sexual. Those are men who would be considered rotten applies anywhere in the world. The only reason why they might get a pass in the Philippines is because they usually target the most desperate, poor and vulnerable girls in rural communities.

Truth be told, there are also quite a lot of healthy apples, men who come to the Philippines to retire and have a serene life with a Filipina, yes, one Filipina whom they usually marry, and adapt to whatever life their new environment throws at them. Since they are retired and with a lot of free time in their hands, they usually help their community with charity projects, handouts, or just by being all-round good folks to their extended families, friends and neighbours.

Like everywhere else in the world, the rotten apples make the news: the abusive man who beats up their Filipino partner, the serial child abuser who buys sexual favours from impoverished families and their young daughters, the no-gooder who ends up smuggling drugs, and the list goes on. Truth be told, there are also rotten apples among the Filipinas: scammers, abusers of the foreign man's genuine love, trust, and credulity.

I am sure you have heard both kinds of stories and, if you are the intelligent young woman I think you are, you will have to conclude that, just like we can't judge all Filipinas from a few rotten apples, the same should apply to foreigner.

I agree 100% with @yick's observation, that usually the health of a developing economy is also measure on how many of these "bad foreigners" are attracted to its shores. As soon as South Korea cleaned its act and grew quickly, in the late 80s, most of the bad foreigners disappeared and those who arrived where legit expat working for large companies, mostly with families and no intention to do harm.

And this brings us to the last point: is it really the foreigners' fault if the Philippines have been stuck in poverty and corruption while countries like South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and even Vietnam have made much greater progress? If you need to find a scapegoat then be my guest. But if you want to be fair, you will recognise that all trouble with the Philippines today come from the Filipinos of today, not the American or Spaniard colonisers of 150 years ago.

Look at the divorce statistics in USA.... Generally said, a huge number of Western women is terrible - living a life with multiple boyfriends and have absolutely no sense for a long term relationship with a husband and children....

Also mentioning the issue of 'dark skin' is strange to me - this is more an issue for Filipino men with some money, they clearly prefer to choose a girl who is not dark-skinned - most European men looking for a woman abroad just don't care, even consider a dark-skin girl to 'show up with a nice exotic color...

I don't think, this person is a typical Filipina living an average life-style in Philippines....and her comments are only about Philippines and USA....

Is the 'man from USA' the only 'foreign man' she knows? Many foreigners in Cebu - the place I know best - are Koreans and Japanese or other Asians...what about them?

I do not see a reason why any Western man should rape a Filipina girl in the Philippines. Most violent men who are beating up and raping local girls in the Philippines are local men. Plenty of violent drug abusers, alcoholics etc...

About Western foreigners, I know it happens sometimes, but this is not really why the huge majority of Western men are traveling to Philippines - as there is no need to rape, there is no shortage of women who will come with you anyway....Most Western men are looking for a long term relationship abroad, just my impression.

Philippines is now in a horrible economic condition - in Cebu there are plenty of jobless girls - you ask a bit around and some women will show up...for long-term but also for short-time - and so what?

My fosterdaughter also lost her job... university graduate, working in a banking office, her monthly salary was php 12000,- (= USD 245,-)

So you can image how much an ordinary girl without higher education working in a factory is earning - if she has still a job.
Many Filipinas doing a simple work in Cebu earn not more than USD 6,- (around PHP 320,-) per working day.

Very common among " educated Filipinos" ( and other E/SE Asians, as well) to be living in the US and be calling Americans foreigners. Are you not the one who is a foreigner? Unless a US citizen. And if you are a US citizen, maybe you should stop calling Americans foreigners?
Also, very common for Filipinos to equate foreigners with white Americans. Like other 194 countries do not exist in their minds.
Also, many Filipinos, no matter how much they say that they are Hispanic and so Americanized and how they love Amerikano and how close they feel to them will call white people foreigners, but will not call
Koreans and Japanese and Chinese foreigners. No criticism against Koreans, no matter what they do in the PH.
