I am being let go from my current position and I am not being replaced and not only that, for the first time since 2008, I have had not ONE job offer from another school or university.

Last year, I had ONE offer, the place I am working at now.

Now these things happen, back in the nineties, Taiwan and Japan had loads of jobs for roundeyes, 2000's and onwards it was South Korea and Thailand and then China decided to pay more and we all came but now, the opportunities are starting to disappear. Another place was Saudi Arabia - it was easy (if you had the qualifications) to get a job there and in various parts of the Middle East but that has gone the same way.

Thankfully, 'Happier Abroad' is not over for me, I have a Peruvian passport and have freedom of movement of South America so will go to Peru or Colombia - 90% leaning on Peru but I will study what Colombia has to offer for work and whatnot. It won't be too hard to get a job in either.

End of an era - never thought the jobs would dry up here - but they have, I don't think it's all to do with the trade tariff's - it's been getting harder and harder since the end of the lockdown here, the Trump trade tariffs are just the final nail in the coffin.

I think your experience in China should help a lot with trade related jobs in South America. Did you ever learn Mandarin? Even if no, at least you learned Chinese culture and are fluent English/Spanish, so an edge over many locals.

Hi Frank, I learned some Mandarin - enough to read the menus and order food but you are right, Peru is like a South East Asian country in many ways and has a massive Japanese as well as Chinese population - a lot of things in Peru remind me of China and my time there will help with being in Peru.

I plan on teaching privates over there - not many native speakers that are legal which is a big factor in my favour, 20 regular students charging 30 dollars an hour in a city of nine million will net me a comfortable existence over there but will look towards bigger and better things.

Basically, yes. Ten years ago, I would have a choice of a dozen jobs, last year the job I have now was my only offer and this year there are hardly any. Also, the kids have changed, you now have students coming to you about their 'mental health' and that never used to happen pre-COVID, the lockdowns have damaged these kids greatly.

China is great, I like living here but it is simply time to go, I would have to leave at 60 anyway which is about seven years from now, I cannot stay here forever but now is the right time. The government has never bothered me and from what I know the Chinese people are happy about who is running them for the most part.

I suppose I could get another job but I am fed up of the yearly visa, the medicals, the cost whereas Peru will have none of that, I can stay as long as I want and work however I want. If I was Chinese heritage like you are I would probably stay for life.

I just asked Co-Pilot, and it said that retirement age is 60 in China, and that the age limit for a work visa, Z visa for China is 60.

I have heard of an age cap for work visas in Indonesia, too. I think the age is higher though. It's not that unusual of a thing, and I would imagine many who have worked abroad know that this can be an issue.

This stuff could change. China has a large older population and a smaller relatively proportionately smaller younger population since they required aborting a lot of the babies and a lot of the baby girls were killed. So maybe they will change the rules and work the older people longer to support the economy. That doesn't mean they will lighten up restrictions on foreigners even if they do that. But older foreign might by less appealing to their young marriageable women, but settle for an old maid.

As for @yick 's situation, I saw a video clip several years ago about Chinese not renewing foreign English teacher's visa.

Maybe they feel like they have built up enough capacity of locals with English fluency. It could also be that they do not feel like a second class country that has to depend on another nation's language. US-China trade relations aren't the best, and they probably promoted English so much to trade with the US, along with other countries.

It might be best to leave before you get to the end of your working years. I have not heard about China being a good place for expat retirees. Their relationship with the west could easily go sideways.

If you did know enough Chinese or have contacts to enable working in trade, that's a very different field and would require new training.
