Wow, she is 22 years old and hotter than hell. One of the last three girls was Miss Ukraine. To my knowledge there has never been a Miss Universe from the United States. That doesn't surprise me at all, American women can't hold a candle to women from South America or eastern Europe.

About time Colombia had the crown back! The only other Colombian Miss Universe was in the 50s. The recent powerhouse has been Venezuela, where girls have virtually the same ethnical mix as Colombia (with a higher bias on costenas) but usually undergo a lot more plastic surgery to look perfection.

I don't usually watch beauty pageants. But whenever I do, they never pick the one I find the prettiest. Sure, Miss Columbia is a pretty woman with a model build and all that. But I thought Miss Ukraine was a point or two prettier. I thought all the runner-ups that were escorted off were prettier.

I wonder if it's just because I have a different view of beauty than most men (slightly), or if I have a different view from gay men and women used as judges. But some of those girls that get up there, are usually pretty, but not the prettiest of the group, IMO.

I haven't watched much in the way of beauty pageants in 20 years and back then didn't watch them much. But I did see a state beauty pageant when I was in college. I went to a big state school. I saw two girls I'd had class with and one I'd worked with. The one I worked with didn't place in the final 10. But she'd won some local beauty pageant, even though she was stout-of-build, an a bit chunky. I'd say she was a 4 or 5 based on looks. But her talent was operatic singing. She sang like she wore horns on her helmet, very talented. That's how she got in.

Of the other two, one girl who was noticeably pretty, got first runner up in the contest. She was in a freshman class of mine. The other was in a freshman class. She was the prettiest of the three, but didn't place in the final 10.

Yet another proof that beauty is subjective. The Colombiana is seriously hot, but given the video above I would have preferred the Dutch girl, pure creole perfection. The thing is with Miss Universe, the judges' verdict isn't based on beauty alone but on an assessment of personality and general knowledge as well. And Paulina happens to be a bright business administration student, as well as a thing of (universal) beauty.

There are a lot of politics involved IMO, this stuff is not a real gauge of beauty. How on earth was not miss czech republic on top..?
I've heard of conspiracy theories stating that they select them depending on current agendas, aimed at distracting the "target" population from corruption. Among these type of accusations (mind you this is purely empirical) for example was Venezuela getting the crown all the time, while the guvment gave away oil concessions on disadvantageous terms. But I don't have proof of this stuff. I'd like to hear someone else on this.

That's true but it's in great part due to all the plastic surgery they do. They have this distorted perception and many end up turning themselves into a common-denominator transvestite looking character.

You can find all kinds of women in South America, they don't all have one specific "look". There are black women, white women, mestizas (mixed amerindian/white), mulatas (mixed black/white), pure amerindians, etc. There are even lots of Asians (including Chinese) in some countries. I'm FINALLY driving to Medellin next week!! I have great expectations, we'll see (crosses fingers).
The one in the second picture is one of those grotesque silicone-filled ones; they say a lot of medellin girls have after-market parts, i hope it's not too bad.

You mean the one showing her back? She doesn't look surgically enhanced. Most Colombian women have that boot "out of the box". What many of them do is make its shape rounder and more prominent by having fat injections, which is a minor procedure and wouldn't really qualify as "surgery".
For at least 5 years now there's been a growing trend for the classier girls to give up major surgeries, especially breast augmentation.
