Reporting from Beijing and Seoul

China views the military exercises in the Sea of Japan as a threat to its territorial integrity. Beijing's indignation appears calibrated to push back at U.S. dominance in the region.

As far as Beijing is concerned, the U.S.-South Korean joint air and sea military exercises that took place this week in the Sea of Japan were a direct threat to China's territorial integrity.

For days now, China's state-controlled media have been beating the drums of war with editorials, each more confrontational than the last.

"What will Americans feel if the Chinese or Russian military travel across the ocean to hold their exercises in the high seas not far from the coast of Florida, New York or California?" demanded an editorial writer in Tuesday's English-language China Daily.

China's reaction has been equally sharp regarding remarks Friday by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Hanoi suggesting that China submit to international mediation to resolve territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The Global Times, which has close ties to the Communist Party, accused the United States on Wednesday of trying to "ambush China in its backyard."

Beijing's indignation appears aimed at asserting new boundaries around its waters and at pushing back at the United States' long-standing dominance in East Asian waters.

"China is protesting because they now feel powerful enough to do so," said Han Suk-hee, an expert on Chinese-North Korean relations at the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University in Seoul. "They feel more mature as a superpower, ready to manage the world, certainly the seas off their own coastline."

Perhaps not by coincidence, China conducted its own military drills near the Yellow Sea coast on the same days that the U.S.-South Korean military drill was taking place, according to the state media. An artillery division of the Nanjing Military Region test-fired rockets toward the sea and tested unmanned drone aircraft and radar, Chinese state media reported Wednesday. The Chinese did not say whether the exercises were in response to the U.S.-South Korean exercises that began Sunday and ended Wednesday.

The U.S.-South Korean exercises — the largest in more than three decades — involved 8,000 military personnel, 20 warships and 200 aircraft, including the aircraft carrier George Washington. They were supposed to serve as a warning to North Korea over the sinking in March of a South Korean warship, which killed 46 crewmen, though North Korea has denied involvement. China also has refused to accept the conclusions of a South Korea-led investigation by international experts — that the warship Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said during a visit to Seoul this month that the joint war games were "to send a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behavior must stop."

North Korea, which had threatened a nuclear strike because of the military drills, on Wednesday reportedly called for the U.S. to end its hostile policy against the country.

The military exercises were originally planned for the Yellow Sea but were moved to the Sea of Japan as a concession to Chinese objections, many observers claim.

"The U.S. and South Korea paid attention to China's worries and changed the location of the drill," Zhou Yongsheng, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, wrote in Oriental Outlook, a government magazine. "It is not merely because the U.S. and South Korea were trying to 'give face' to China. It has shown China's power and impact in Northeast Asia is rising."

Bonnie Glaser, a China fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said Beijing has overreacted to the U.S.-South Korean exercises.

"The Chinese are very sensitive about having foreign military ships anywhere near their coastline, insisting there are no international waters in the Yellow Sea," Glaser said. "They're also very prone to conspiracy theories. On this issue, it doesn't serve their interests."

China holds military drill in the Yellow Sea The People's Liberation Army (PLA) held a military supply drill in the Yellow Sea over the weekend, amid reported tension over a scheduled joint exercise between the United States and Republic of Korea (ROK) navies.

The PLA's General Logistics Department and the Office of Transport and Combat Readiness co-organized the latest drill, which started on Saturday "deep in the Yellow Sea", Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.

Codenamed "Warfare 2010", the exercise involved troops from the Jinan Military Region and staff of the Ministry of Transport, Xinhua reported.

The drill was aimed at improving defense capabilities against long-distance attacks. Four helicopters and four rescue vessels were deployed for the exercise on Saturday.

Tanks were also loaded onto vessels at a port in Yantai, Shandong province, on Sunday. Similarly, rail transported tanks to ships and other military equipment was transferred to vessels, Xinhua reported.

The exercise focused on transporting military supplies for future joint battles, Xinhua quoted drill commander Zuo Xiaohu as saying.

The drill came at a sensitive time with Washington and Seoul scheduled to hold a joint military exercise in the Yellow Sea. The joint exercise was postponed several times since June following strong objection from Beijing, which said such military action will only serve to further destabilize the situation in the region.

But the PLA's Yellow Sea drill was only a regular mission and had little to do with the US-ROK exercise, some Chinese military analysts said on Monday.

"The scale of the weekend exercise was quite small as it was co-organized by the Logistics Department, which is in charge of equipment transportation. The nature of the drill is very different from that of the US-ROK joint military action," Beijing-based military analyst Peng Guangqian told China Daily.

The highlight of the PLA drill was the movement via rail and the sending of tanks into ships, which can "notably lift the efficiency of military transportation", said Li Daguang, a military specialist with the University of National Defense.

Li also dismissed speculations linking the exercise to the upcoming joint military drill between Washington and Seoul in the Yellow and East China seas.

"The section of the exercise in the Yellow Sea is a search-and-rescue one targeted at various threats including maritime disasters. It's an ordinary exercise from which I can't detect any signal of discontent over the US-ROK exercise," Li said.

"But such exercises are also meaningful in practical terms, given the current background," said Li Jie, a researcher with the Chinese navy's military academy.

It was not an "entire coincidence" that the PLA's exercise had taken place days before Washington and Seoul was expected to carry out their drill, Li Jie said.

Following continuous pressure from China, Washington announced that it will hold a portion of a planned joint naval operations with the ROK in the East China Sea, and not carry out the drill entirely in the Yellow Sea between the ROK and China as originally expected.

The US also planned to deploy the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the East China Sea to avoid upsetting China, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The ROK's Dong-a Ilbo newspaper carried information from the country's defense ministry confirming that anti-submarine exercises will be conducted in both maritime areas.

The White House said the high-level meetings on July 21 in Seoul between US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and their ROK counterparts will "discuss and likely approve a proposed series of combined military exercises, including new naval and air exercises in both the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea", which "will send a clear message of deterrence" to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Last week, China said it firmly opposes any foreign warships or planes entering the Yellow Sea as well as adjacent waters that were engaged in activities that would impact on its security and interests.

There are a lot of simularities between China and USA, .If you speak Chinese, you will find that they are fine people. But, business is another thing, there are no boundries in a business/technology fight. It really comes down to the basic principles of the business mind and self image. Cash Flowing in from export empowered them t o regain a dominant role in Asia as the super power. That cash flow came primarily from USA and Europe. They have to show strength to prove they are the dominant powerin the region, even though the main focus for China is making money to feed the buisness and the people. The table talk is that they hate Americans and love Europeans, but most of the ones who hate Americans either have never been there, or only visited the large cities on a fast tour, were refused a visa or saw the dissarray and how dangerous our cities are with big scary people on the streets, people welding guns on the streets, robbing stores etc…for most Far East Asia countries that rarely happens, most Europeans bad mouth Americans for their own reasons as well. It is our own way and our own fault that we made the Chinese super wealthy in order to cust costs.

Taiwanese even though we backed them since WWII, saved them from the Communists, helped them become mega rich, also bad mouth the USA. In the main stream we are seen as a huge nation of sleeze. They judge us by the way we dress, the number of obese and unhealthy people, visual stuff, because those are the obvious targets. It is difficult for the common outsider to overlook America’s Slop food and lack of fine cousine, mainly and difficult for them to appreciate the American way. So it is much better for us to make friend’s with them than be enemies, regardless, both have a lot to learn and gain from one another. We can never undo the stupid decsions the former US adminstrations have done, they were clueless and made huge errors in dealing with the Chinese Government to make a fair deal.

Every Chinese born is remided how poor they have been for centuries, they have a huge history, the Communists wiped it out, and only left new business opportunity, they are empowered to believe that they are the center of the universe.

On the Military side and technology sector, we are complete fools to give away our high technology, we have let the entire world come to our best schools and learn from MIT for example when the majority of our own people do not even go to college or university, allow technology leaks, from us not being careful, they are more careful, we are careless. In the future between China and India there will be millions of people with PhD’s or double PhD’s, You will have to have a PhD and a Masters just to get a good paying job in another 20 years from now, the competition will be huge. It would be healthy, smart and advantageous for Americans to learn more about other cultures, become more international, become bilangual, and be more careful with immigration and safe guard our technology, then watch the respect level from others go way up.

Look at what we have done. China will not look out for US in the future, and it is a game of economy, technology and world political balance/control. As sad as some people make it out to be, Arizona is doing the correct thing, because it has become out of control. The Chinese Love the USA to have weak leaders like Carter, Obama, the give away liberals, I saw this for decades, any US President that is not a liberal give away artist is the enemy of China. We are our own worst enemies because of these policies that have erroded us down. Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, you name it, are all very very tough on immigration. America was at its peak in technology before the immigration shift following the civil rights act. The civil rights act should have been used to help our own people, not to open us up to be raped by the rest of the world, the liberals are going to be the ones who set the laws in place, then we are going to sink ourselves for voting for these morons, because there will be no future.
