Japan or China?

OK guys, I have a question: Japan or China?
After my trip to China, and watching the current world economy, where the money is, where the jobs are, etc., I've become much more interested in Asia in general. What I want to know is, between Japan and China, which is the best place to focus on. Keep in mind that if I had to focus on just learning one language, what country provides the best quality of life, best future, best people, etc.
Notice I'm not mentioning SE Asia. Nothing against those countries, but I don't hear about them as being the next hot ticket in the world economy and so on, as much as I'd love to visit Vietnam and Cambodia someday.
I'm interested in hearing from those who've lived in BOTH places, Japan and China, and can give me the best all-around advice.
Note that I took a year of Japanese in college 20 years ago, but I didn't apply myself and most of it is gone. I do appreciate the Japanese cleanliness and orderliness, but I also sense that the Japanese are xenophobic and don't like outsiders. The Chinese appeared much friendlier, when I was over there, but it's also dirtier, and more chaotic.
