IT’S the original tide of filth. This shocking picture shows a city centre stream covered entirely with rubbish.
The heavily-polluted creek runs past makeshift houses in Manila, capital of the Philippines.

The horrifying photo was published at the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, Turkey.

Experts there are aiming to solve the chronic shortages of clean water blighting poorer parts of the world.

Just a word of warning on Manila. Never drink the local tip-water.

The reason why these countries are like this is because there is no basic sanitation type education. People don't understand how littering can contribute over time to dangerous pollution. I watch people all the time in Manila just throw their garbage on the street without even thinking about it. Also there is no incentive for people to use trash cans as its actually hard to find one! Also there in no manditory recycling here so people just throw everything together in the same bag.

They would need to seriously police people here and spot fine them or arrest them for littering over a long period of time while also educating the youth regarding good sanitation habits and perhaps after a few generations things might change and become cleaner.

Right now with their laid back attitude about life, pollution problems are not going away here in SE Asia anytime soon.
