Would AW find this book Misogynist?

Post by Tamingstrange »

There's a "Children's" book called The Hapless Child, Written and illustrated by Edward Gorey. The story pretty much goes as follows:

"Charlotte Sophia had a charmed life with loving "well to do" parents. Her blissful existence ends when her father is called to fight in Africa. When she learns of his death, Charlotte's mother falls into a fatal decline and she is left orphaned.

The family lawyer ships her off to boarding school where she is punished by teachers and bullied by fellow classmates.

Charlotte eventually escapes from the miserable place but things don't improve much. The locket containing her parents pictures is stolen and she is sold to a drunken brute who makes her work for scraps of food.

She changes so much that her father, who, as it happens is not actually dead, doesn't even recognise her limp lifeless body lying in the street."

Pretty dark and messed up right? If the book were more popular, do you think AW would cry "Sexism" and "Misogyny" over it? especially since the author is a male.

Here's a link to the book:

Probably not. Life used to be pretty much like that, and still is in many places with no welfare. A man must make provision or have policies in case of his demise. At most they would say how tough life is for women, so would like it as it makes them feel oppressed.

Of course none of them would admit why doesn't the woman take responsibility for her own maintenance to support her and her daughter.
