As WW III quickly approaches every effort is being made to confiscate weapons.

That would be my first thought. Long pointed weapon thats easy to slip under the waist or through the armpit of a thug wearing body armor, might be seen by occupying rogue forces as a threat.

Of course in the gunless UK, it also COULD be that knives are proportionately more a gang weapon of choice than here in the USA. So it could just be a nanny state looking for a new "cause" to rally do-gooders.
