What I'm always struck by is the self confidence with which obese women in the U.S. speak and carry themselves. They clearly don't feel like social outcasts; on the contrary, the world is their oyster.

I suppose that was the intention when the "self esteem" culture took over American schools about 30 years ago. Problem is, it is a false confidence that is being built up. Go into any American school and you will find any number of young people apparently holding themselves in great esteem when it is not the slightest bit apparent what they esteem themselves for, as they have absolutely nothing going for them.

The propaganda involved in creating this mindset often involves standing reality on its head. I knew the feminist program had gone off completely into cloud-cookoo land as long ago as 1983 when I saw the results of a poll asking American high school students whether men or women were better athletes. The majority said that women were. No matter that Serena Williams would be lucky ever to take a game off the lowest-ranked men's touring pro, or that women's world records in track and field are comparable to those of high school freshman boys in Peoria. Their schoolmarms had convinced them that women were better athletes. In the world of the feminists, the end -- fat, homely women who carry themselves with unshakeable confidence -- justify the means of completely distorting reality for young people.

Yes, it's ridiculous when women become so fat through laziness and overeating, but some of them are that way due to medical problems, such as glandular disorders. My best friend in Hungary has a girlfriend who is enormously fat because of her medical probems, but she is a very kind person. Fat women are pretty rare in Hungary.

I would never date a fat woman, but if a fat woman is not a bitchy feminist, I see no reason to be unkind to her. I guess I'm less of an angry person than I used to be when I was living in America. I almost forget what it was like there.

Funny how few glandular disorders there were in the U.S. 40 years ago.

To be clear: I don't intend to make fun of obese women -- like anyone in poor health they deserve sympathy and kindness. Since my taste runs to enormous racks, I've dated a few decidedly overweight women, and the sticking point is always what bad health they are in. The gripe here is with: (a) a scheme of feminist values that distorts reality and devalues men; (b) an American food industry that, in order to make more profit, tries to hook people on a horrendous diet; and (c) a culture that has been built entirely around the private automobile and entirely eliminated walking as a normal daily activity.

On this latter point: My sister's kids were 11 and 9 when they moved to their current suburban digs. From that time until the kids went off to college, not once -- not once -- did those kids walk out the door to any place but a car parked in the driveway. That's fairly typical now for American suburban kids.

Considering all the genetically modified foods, artificial chemicals, contaminated meat, and all kinds of other weird stuff in the US food supply today, it's no wonder people get sick in various ways. The FDA pretty much just looks the other way. I think the EU has much stricter health standards and actually enforces them.

Those are some great points.

It is indeed f***ed up when fat American women create some kind of "godess" self-image of themselves in their mind. Medical science tells us that even small amounts of fat on the abdomen are unhealthy and people should recognize that.

I notice that Hungarians don't seem to eat prepackaged foods as snacks when they're on the train. They usually just have some rolls, a piece of fruit, or a sandwich they made at home with some juice or a beer. In America, everyone seems to drink soda and eat potato chips or twinkies.

Yeah, living someplace where there's good public transportation makes a huge difference. When I first came to Hungary, my legs were so tired from walking all the time for the first couple months, but then I got used to it and lost weight. I find it very liberating not to need a car all the time, and train rides are often a good opportunity to chat with people.

Yeah, that's pretty sad.

Another reason why so many kids are fat in the US is that the physical education in American schools is either nonexistant or is lame and not very physical. Sometimes while I'm teaching, I see some of the other students in their PE class outside. PE classes here in Hungary are pretty serious: they make the kids exercise hard, climb ropes, hop up stairs, and run all the time in addition to playing the usual sports like soccer and basketball. This is yet another reason why people should raise their kids in Europe instead of America. Most kids here don't care about video games and would rather go out dancing and partying.

Has anyone seen the "Too fat to fight" military report about the US?
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/2 ... index.html

The US wants to keep fighting wars, but it's quickly running out of money and running out of fit people.
