I remember in the latest Rambo movie where John Rambo, of all people, talked about "Arguing with what is." I think this is also the title of a book I read, or at least the primary subject of the book. Much better to just do something. Of course, Rambo was right in his story (probably written by Stallone himself, and those people did something stupid and all died horrible deaths.
I learned some hard lessons out here, and made plenty of mistakes, but at least I am out here to learn them and make them. I know the value of that old NIke phrase, "Just do it." But I would alter it a bit and say "Just do something." It will get you much further than arguing with what is.

Just get off your @$$ get moving. Take a first step and get going SOMEWHERE. Do SOMETHING! It doesn't really matter which direction that step is in, but you can't get somewhere by sitting still. I think most people prefer to lie in their little rut and cry that they've fallen and can't get up, like that old commercial. While it's comforting on a certain level to constantly bitch and moan about how awful things are here, once that "novelty" has worn off and the message has gotten through, people are going to tune this out and walk away, since they don't see many real answers on here. Mainly just complaining. The emphasis on this forum needs to be on solutions.

I love that commercial, so stupid it's funny! remember watching during afternoon cartoons after school, although I don't know why they would put a commercial like that during kids shows...RedDog wrote:Exactly. What about those who know what the solution is but are unable to execute a plan due to financial or other (LEGITIMATE) constraints?
Wielding the blade of evil's bane, he sealed the dark one away and gave the land light. This man, who traveled through time to save the land, was known as the Hero of Men. The man's tale was passed down through generations until it became legend...

Well, you can't execute a plan until you have your plan in order first. Execution is the last part of a plan. If you don't have money, then start saving it, and cutting corners in whatever ways you can. If your car is costing you too much money, sell it and buy a cheaper one, or take a bus. Don't go out to eat so much, don't go to the movies so much, etc. etc. For example, when I was growing up, I never owned a car and just borrowed my dad's. I worked my ass off during school and college, because I knew I wanted to get out of the US. I traveled abroad, whenever I had the chance and had already visited 7 countries by the time I was 18. I knew that saving my money for traveling was what I wanted, and not spending it on a car to show off. So, your the first steps of your "journey" begins by making little changes like that and following through with them.The_Hero_of_Winds wrote:RedDog wrote:Exactly. Another thing you might want to consider is PMing some of the guys on here, who come from the former USSR territories, but who escaped abroad. They came from countries that are/were poorer than the US, but they still got out, so if they can do it, any American can do it. It's a matter of priorities.

I would say you're looking at the wrong solution, or making the mistake of assuming their is only one. If you really want to do it, you'll do it by hook or by crook. I think I wrote on here somewhere before about the guy who simply sold all he had and with less than $2000 USD in his pocket he just went to the Philippines. He's now married in the Philippines, starting a family, and living the life of his dreams there. The reason he was able to do it, was because he was willing to make sacrifices to achieve his desires. He wrote about living on less than $200 per month when he first arrived. He worked his ass off to build a life for himself. In a short time, he did just that. That was huge inspiration for me and probably the greatest prompt for me to just "go for it." I don't regret it for one second.The_Hero_of_Winds wrote: What about those who know what the solution is but are unable to execute a plan due to financial or other (LEGITIMATE) constraints?

If you were taking care of your sick mother or grandmother, then yes, you have a legitimate constraint. If you have financial issues, ask for financial advice. People looking for immediate satisfactions or unrealistic short-cuts will not get there.The_Hero_of_Winds wrote: What about those who know what the solution is but are unable to execute a plan due to financial or other (LEGITIMATE) constraints?

Well, besides the fact that I have NO MONEY (even though I am looking for a job), I am currently in college, and I can't just up and leave.
I do realize that yes, there will be things I have to sacrifice, but yes I would need some assistance. I am willing to do the work. I also recognize that I MAY need some kind of assistance.

You are right on that end. What exactly do you mean by "by hook or by crook"?Terrence wrote:I would say you're looking at the wrong solution, or making the mistake of assuming their is only one. I am a Criminal Justice major nearing the end of my FIRST semester in school (I attend a 2 year college).

OK, let's make an assumption that your goal is to go abroad. How does the criminal justice major fit in with that goal?

Only I have a real excuse, no INCOME and In School but school is paid for already ($70). You need the internet and a computer as min IMHO, selling everything might get me to about grand or so, that's not even enough to buy a plane ticket to most places. That said I have a plan, what you need is a plan.
Criminal Justice will do you no good in a country where the laws are different. If you were a lawyer in another country they would make you take the bar again here to practice law. What you need a career choice that's transferable. Working with numbers (accounting, banking) is one thing. Computers/IT is another, there's always a demand for programmers.
Both you can learn in two years or less.
Just make a plan, if there's nothing personally holding you back and it seems nothing is, then you can plan a 2-3 year exit strategy fairly easily. You can easily look for jobs online and see what requirements are needed. You already are a native English speaker and that helps quite a bit with multi-national companies.

insolent fool! fail to heed my warning about this career path and you will feel the wrath!The_Hero_of_Winds wrote:I am a Criminal Justice major nearing the end of my FIRST semester in school (I attend a 2 year college).momopi wrote:How far are you along with college, and what is your major?

The easiest way to go overseas is to become a teacher. Just get a BA in either English, Mathematics or one of the science fields like Biology or something. And poof, after your diploma you could easily find work overseas in a foreign public school to build up some experience and then transfer to a decent international school somewhere. It's a no brainer, it's just a matter of whether you have the fortitude to go through with it all the way. Your looking at 3-4 years of schooling depending on how many classes you take then another couple of years working in not as exciting schools or countries building up experience. To get to a country you really want to be in your looking at around 6 years or so from now, give or take a year.
