What's your experience with gated communities?

As a traveller, I have seen quite a lot of gated communities; even been in a couple of them, too. Even though gated communities are clean and well kept, I generally like to avoid going into gated communities, even when visiting someone or if invited to an event taking place in a gated community. To me, going into a gated community is like going into Nevada's Area 51 military base. Literally as though the gates and entrance building to a gated community may as well be a high voltage electric fence patrolled by guards armed with M-16s and hand grenades, watched by dozens of security cameras, and also having "No Trespassing" signs that say; "Use of Deadly Force Authorized" near the entrance.
