Have you found Americans abroad to always be more relaxed?

Post by Temprano26 »

Whenever I met an American in Costa Rica or in Bocas Del Toro I always found they were having more fun with no cliquish, don't talk to strangers nonsense that we get here. It made me totally forget how uptight and paranoid they were until I got back to Dallas where the vibe in the air made everyone into a drag to be around. The only Americans that are down-to-earth seem to be world travelers with a strong curiosity about the world around them. They have been around people with a lot less who still manage to be happier than those who have so much more. It saddens them to see how miserable their fellow Americans are when we are the most economically fortunate country in the world.

Americans actually are good deep down inside but our culture doesn't nurture it anymore.

Yes, I with agree with the OP; that is, in Asia. In Europe, most of my experiences with Americans were that most of them were complete d-bags.

Maybe in Asia and Latin America, American's can act more relaxed and don't need act like d-bags to compete with other foreigners?

Unfortunately in my experience, in Europe, I found them mostly complaining and saying how they couldn't wait to get the hell out.

In Paris, this african dude was asking for donations with a clipboard on hand. Down the road, I asked this American girl if she thought it was a scam or something, but she just mumbled "i don't know.." REFUSING EYE CONTACT and turning her face away, without any attempt at stopping. SOUNDS FAMILIAR?
Like I posted before, some British girls instead actually make eye contact and verbalize.

Also in the night train, there was this family talking by themselves without any intention to meet anyone. As i walked back to my room, the 10yo gave me a 'creep' look and they slammed the door shut (and no, i wasn't eyeing the girl).
1)Too much of one thing defeats the purpose.
2)Everybody is full of it. What's your hypocrisy?

I found the acorn doesn't fall too far from the tree. I've met some cool Americans traveling but I've also witnessed them being cold as well.
Don't necessarily blame Americans for being this way, it's just that we are a bit socially retarded and you quickly discover this once you are around people in other nations that aren't.
