"Prophetic" Italian song from the 80's

Post by publicduende »

I have just given this song for Eurobrat to listen to, as part of (my idea of) his ongoing "Italian induction". I have hastily translated the lyrics and thought it would be nice to post it here.

It's a classical pop song from the early 80s, from very talented (albeit relatively little known), Marco Ferradini. The interesting thing about it is that it seems to spell the message that so many HA members have in mind almost to a tee: "all women" adore douchebags and mercilessly shun Mr. Nice. In the second part of the song we learn that the woman-hating speech is from a singer's friend, deeply broken after his woman went away, to which the song true message is spelt out: it is useless to generalise, as there are no rules in love. Knowing who you are and being it consistently and completely is the is the only way to to find a good match and keep the relationship stable. Which, coincidentally, is what I have always thought

Take a woman, tell her you love her
write her love songs
send her roses, poems
give her all the juices of your heart;
always make her feel important
give her the best, the best you have to give
try to be a tender lover,
be always present, sort her trouble.

And you'll be sure she will leave you,
as she whom has too much love won't love back,
and you'll be sure she will leave you,
the less you love, the stronger you become, you know.

Take a woman, treat her badly,
make her wait for hours,
don't turn up when she calls you,
make it look like you're doing her a favour,
make her feel of little importance,
balance well love and cruelty,
try to be a tender lover,
but outside the bed, have no mercy.

And then you'll be sure she will love you,
as she whom has little love gives more love back,
and then you'll be sure she will love you,
the less you love, the stronger you become, you know.

No, my dear friend,
I don't agree with you,
you speak like a broken man,
you've been way too nice, she went away,
and you just couldn't get over it.

There are no rules in love,
you just have to be yourself,
let the door to your heart wide open,
you'll see, a woman is already looking for you.

What is a man, without love,
on this you will agree with me,
what is a man, without love,
this is the only rule there is.
