Just curious...And anyone living in a foreign country, whether it be an immigrant coming to the United States or a Westerner moving to Asia, they should learn to adapt to the local culture, learn to speak the language, and respect the traditions of the country their living in. That way, you reduce the antagonisms and culture-clashes that too often occur with multiculturalism, see i.e. Muslim immigrants in Europe, for example.

If it were only that simple. Jews spoke perfect German during WW2 and Koreans in Japan speak perfect Japanese.

In some countries people don't like for foreigners to integrate and don't even allow them to do that. They would rather have them remain foreigners.

The solution is to live in mixed race countries such as Brazil, the DR, Colombia, etc. The Philippines is also good because it's so mixed. Not perfect but still quite good. Way better than the USA.

In America, as long as people are unnaturally grouped into these broad categories, there will be racism. And a lot of racism now comes from so called non whites who can be nastier than many so called whites. Most whites are at least indifferent which is already a good thing.

Also, if you don’t believe in multiculturalism, what are your views on those Western expats who venture into non-Western lands yet who fail to integrate into the local culture? For example, Westerners who relocate to Thailand without learning Thai? Or those who have lived in the Philippines for years without knowing any Tagalog?

Western men who do not integrate in such SE Asian societies are doing OK. They act colonial - which is an illusion since they are on a visa there. But it can still look and feel pretty colonial to them.

They have been doing it for so long that as long as money flows from them to the locals, the latter are happy to have them there just the way they are. Even if they goose-step. Even if they walk around bloated like colonial frogs with chests ( and wallets) puffed up in imperial self importance. The natives also see them as someone to practice English with- a walking free teacher.

They don't expect them to speak the local language because they see it as unlikely as for a cat to learn to bark or for a cow to learn to trill like a nightingale- an impossibility of sorts. They have been witnessing Europeans and Americans act like this for centuries and know these cannot change.

And because Asians are practical people, they have learned to adjust to it. They speak English to them, get the dollars, learn more English, get more dollars and everyone is happy. When a Westerner learns some 5 words in the language after 30 years there, the locals find it cute and clap their hands. They put him on YouTube- a monkey that can talk.

If you learn the language, you make people bristle because you go against the centuries- old grain. You also make them feel uncomfortable as they don't know what category to put you into. Some stop respecting you because the arms- length distance is gone. Some also begin making fun of you.

The only ones that like the Thai- and Filipino-speaking you are the very very poor people because they don't speak any English. They also begin to accept you as one of them.

I still learn the local languages because in my heart I know that neo-colonialism is not right, cultural imperialism is not right and I will do what I think is right.
