Yes, but my usb wifi receiver was not compatible, and I went back. I am more interested in whonix personally. I also believe I heard somewhere Ubuntu has a backdoor.

I forgot what it was, but after a certain version Cannocal installed something that gave it more access to your system. Look it up. It has been a while. I like Debian or Whonix, which is based off Debian (as is Ubuntu). Whonix has double onion routing on every program, plus has a ton of goodies. I personally like that setup.

There are hundreds of linux distros. What do you want out of it?
If you have an older laptop and just want to boot into linux and use a browser, puppylinux is all you need.
If you have Apple/Mac envy, then you can use pear ("Pear OS 7") or elementary OS Luna.
Want something that looks like Windows 7? There's Zorin OS 7.
Fancy yourself a tinkering gnome? Buy the Raseberry Pi and run Raspbian linux.

I would not recommend ubuntu/mint as they are fairly general and boring (if easy to use) distributions. I would recommend going with something more interesting/exotic that caters to your computing style. Also, connectivity issues can be a problem with linux/unix so be prepared to deal with that if using public/school/work internet. Also, I would recommend a dual boot so you have options, but keep in mind linux erases GRUB.
