I dont think this will affect internet-based businesses much.

Brazil should have a faster connection (lower ping rate) to Asia and Europe. I guess better connections will make LA less of an internet backwater. Maybe more LA based internet companies.

I guess some countries near China might find it convenient to try to be included into Chinese censorship - so yes on second thought I guess that would hurt FaceBook, gambling, porn, etc.

Overall just one more step toward the world getting over the American obsession.

I'm just wondering why China and Russia would go through the trouble to build a new internet unless they thought the old internet is going to be destroyed(WWW III) in the near future. I believe all the servers for the current internet are in US and if anything happened to the US power grid they would stop working rather abruptly.

If critical hardware is under USSA control, then any packets passing through those pipes can eventually be blocked, altered, copied or examined.
They didn't build this just to store more pr0n. O_o
