Well done, J. As an Armenian, you were probably able to rule out immediately my choice for the mountain range -- the Caucasus. I couldn't dredge Bligh and Andersonville up from memory, and had no clue on the South American mountain.

The irony is not lost on me that in China, and presumably most other places where I couldn't get a job unless I showed up in person, the young scholars who -- one and all -- couldn't answer a single one of these questions, are considered superior candidates to me for teaching English. The people hiring apparently have no idea of the degradation of American educational system over the past 45 years. Most of these American kids maybe can give instruction in verbal communication within the narrow range of their functional vocabularies, but couldn't even begin to impart any kind of writing skills. Because they don't have them. believe me -- I've graded enough college papers in recent years to know. Most of them are completely unable to construct a coherent paragraph, and make grammatical errors one after another that you would virtually never see 50 years ago from anyone with just a high school diploma.

Gsjackson, I think some Asians with horrible English oral skills have better writing skills than some Americans living in the inner cities or 'Redneck' American States such as Alabama. LOL!

I'm pretty certain that's the case. And it's not limited to the areas you mention. Functional illiteracy is ubiquitous in the U.S. now.
