Cool song I heard

I remember a country where not only could a movie like this get made, it was a cultural touchstone. Now we just ritualistically join in media incantations to "our heroes."

This ending is the only thing I remember from seeing the movie in '79. I took the point as being that while the U.S. may think its wars are devouring only the low-life dregs of society -- a healthy pruning, as it were -- in actuality it is also eating its best and brightest (as represented by the Treat Williams character). If they didn't literally die in Vietnam, they died metaphorically as citizens by disengaging from the country, becoming cynical and apathetic.
