What is causing sterility in the West?

Post by Think Different »

It doesn't take much observation to realize that couples in the West are having fewer and fewer children, and from what I have learned from my wife and my own experience with the matter (from doctors, other couples, etc), it's a VERY common and historically recent phenomenon. Whereas in the 3rd world women are popping out 5 or 6 kids per woman, the average European woman has about 1.5 children (or less) and the average American woman 2.1 (replacement rate).

I know for a fact that it is not due solely to abortions and homosexuality, although that has a big role in destroying society through a declining population. My wife and I struggled for 10 years to have a child and I know many others who have had the same problem. It's not that we personally are/were unhealthy. We exercised regularly, ate good and healthy food, took our vitamins, etc. etc. However, when you look at the fact that malnourished people living in 3rd world hovels can have lots of kids without trying, it almost becomes a case of life imitating art, as you see in the film "Idiocracy". Just look at how many kids Americans used to have just 40 years ago. The average family had 4 or 5 kids! We had neighbors with 7 kids and another neighbor with 11 kids. And that was in the suburbs of DC!

I have no answer for this, except that perhaps something is in the food, namely chemicals, which are making us in the West all sterile. Of course, the high rate of birth control pills and abortions in the West does have a role in this, perhaps.

Any ideas? If the West doesn't overcome this, we will be pushed to the fringes within 100 years by those who prefer to create life rather than destroy/prevent it. The devil on my left shoulder almost wants me to go out and knock up a ton of European women, just to help save the West!

That doesn't get the point of my question, and also doesn't make sense. Yes, many Europeans still have traditional values, but Europeans also have a much lower birth rate than Americans do, so it doesn't compute. Also, if the food in Europe is more natural than in the US, why do Europeans have so few children (even less than Americans)? Is it just the birth control affecting EU birth rates and crappy food affecting Americans?

What makes you think the issue is sterility? Contraception is universally available and cheap in the west and we no longer have a religious culture thats says you should not use contraception, so couples get to decide how many kids (if any) they want. My ex and I wanted 2 and that's what we had. The rest of the time we used contraception. And many of my friends have decided not to have children and technology allows them to do that. So guys who might have made bad parents can choose not to be fathers.

Last time I checked in the US there are over 300 million people. When I was a teen there were 200 million. So do we really need to have more kids?
