Saudi Arabia Doubles Down on Atheism; New Laws Declares It Equivalent to Terrorism

We’ve seen before how Saudi pundits find it easy to conflate atheism and terrorism, but now it’s official: Saudi Arabia’s new terrorism laws say outright that nonbelievers and others who commit thought crime are the same as violent terrorists.

According to Human Rights Watch:
The interior ministry regulations [introduced over the last three months] include … sweeping provisions that authorities can use to criminalize virtually any expression or association critical of the government and its understanding of Islam. These “terrorismâ€￾ provisions include the following:

Article 1: “Calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based.â€￾
In Saudi Arabia, you’re asking for severe punishment even if you’re not an atheist or a dissident, but merely think that people must be allowed to state their piece.
In fact, expressing any sympathy or support for freethinkers is now a crime in the kingdom:

Article 4: “Anyone who aids [“terroristâ€￾] organizations, groups, currents [of thought], associations, or parties, or demonstrates affiliation with them, or sympathy with them, or promotes them, or holds meetings under their umbrella, either inside or outside the kingdom; this includes participation in audio, written, or visual media; social media in its audio, written, or visual forms; internet websites; or circulating their contents in any form, or using slogans of these groups and currents [of thought], or any symbols which point to support or sympathy with them.â€￾

Brian Whitaker at al-bab.com explains:
Since the entire system of government is based on Wahhabi interpretations of Islam, non-believers are assumed to be enemies of the Saudi state.
There’s a certain twisted logic to that, and it is self-fulfilling to boot. Damn straight I’m the sworn enemy of a country that slanders atheists as terrorists and that aims to use the ultimate state violence against people who reject Islam.

Their system uses systemic terror to enforce their will. What else can you say about a religion
that uses head-chopping against someone wanting to leave the religion.

I don't understand the title of this thread. We are not all Atheists, so how does this apply to all of us? I don't think most of us are Atheists either.

Some members are atheists or agnostics or followers of other religions like Buddhism which aren't one of the 'acceptable' religions, Christianity or Islam so by us non-conformist spiritual free thinkers communicating with them on this board by association we are now terrorists too according to SA...

HA are some sort of religion. Just because we are free thinkers doesnt mean we are dont believe in something.

If it were such a big deal for Saudi Law, they would crackdown on all those foreign workers on their land, which includes lots of Americans.

There probably is lots of American Atheists working there on a regular basis. Are they going to get exiled? Not likely.

Well they lied to get into the country probably stating they are 'Christian'. Try getting a work visa in SA and put on your application atheist, agnostic, no religious preference or some other Religion outside of Islam, Christianity or Judaism and see if it would get approved by the SA government. I doubt it. The whole point is that individuals cannot openly declare being an apostate of Islam while being in the country without certain retribution.

Can't you just say that you believe in God, but not organized religion? Most people are like that nowadays. It's popular to believe in a God who works through every religion. It's also more politically correct to say that too, and sounds more inclusive and accepting. How can you go wrong with saying that?

Cause Saudi Arabia is still stuck with the mentality of the 8th century.

No. And saying that can go very, very wrong.

well I am of Muslim background, with mix of Shia, Sunni, Sufi beliefs, but I support Happier Abroad, right now I want to travel the world for fun and mutaah(temporary marriage with a girlfriend). Once I feel this woman is the one, I will do permanent marriage.
