Practicing Gratitude

Post by yick »

I was depressed once and the one thing (well, two, a good daily exercise regimen but that's another post...) that helped me get rid of it was to practice gratitude for the things I have - which is a lot - health, height, still got all my hair, I am reasonably handsome, intelligence, education, a job I like, money, savings, living abroad (a long held dream from being a kid...), I still have my parents and all my family are fine and doing well - so, most nights after my run - I go to a quiet place and thank The Universe for the things I have and not for the things I want - because the reality is I have plenty already and I want to thank The Universe who is the mother of all human deities whose followers are all housed on this planet for what I have.

This practice has held me in good stead, most people don't realise what they have and they are striving for more for which they get punished internally leading to depression, alcoholism, drugs etc - make a list of the things that you have that are positives - let's take @Winston and the things he has going for him...

Bright and articulate and has a degree from a good university
Still has his parents and they love and care for him
Has wealth and doesn't have to work ever again
Has a handsome son and a pretty baby mother who would happily welcome him back
Has a home (in fact several and will be his once his parents pass on...)
Has citizenship of two countries
Has had sexual relations with a lot of women
Has never really been told what to do, has a life of relative freedom where he does and goes where he wants.
Still has reasonable good health
Has written and published several books

He has probably done more than that but that will do for now, so as we can see, Winston has a lot of gifts from The Universe and instead of him whinging about how unfair life is, he needs to start thanking for what he has or else it will never ever get better - when most people pray, they want things 'please let me win the lottery' or whatever but until you start being grateful for what you have now, life won't get better and you won't get what you want.

Think about a friend you give things to and they're always complaining to you and being ungrateful - how would you feel about them? You wouldn't care for them all that much and would resent their lack of gratitude for what you have done for them.

People are too greedy and they want more - look at Harvey Weinstein - what he had was never ever enough, do you think he thanked The Universe the once when he went around doing evil deeds despite the fact he had everything he possibly wanted?

Also, people want good things to happen to them whilst being arseholes - they want their cake and eat it - you need to be good for good things to happen to you - I didn't make this up, I read it in a book and have been doing it ever since - you won't always have good days and not everything you want will go your way but you will be happier and more will go your way than not. The best thing I have ever done in my life are these two things...

Exercise - running, weights, boxing, press ups, rowing etc
