Why Are People Here Not Traveling?

Others have mentioned this before, but it seems more like self loathing and defeatism (as much as the West can suck), and less doing. Why isn't there as many trip reports on here? I know it takes time to plan trips, but heck once you take the first, the next will be easier. Matter of fact I am planning a Colombia trip. So what gives with all the negative posts and lack of progress on trips?

Money is the general problem. We need to stick around in Feminaziland to earn it and don't earn enough to travel all that often.

I think folks should be focusing on ways to earn money that can be done remotely from anywhere (or at least a lot of places). That's what I'm doing, and in about a year I'll be free to bug out and go where I like. Tropical paradise here I come...

Folks are, it is just that there are not many options that actually work out.

I guess here is where I am coming from: I am trying to do different gigs and find something that can sustain me long term. In the mean time though, I go to school (going to be done here pretty soon) as well as work in retail, yet I still find time to at least visit these places. I am not saying live in X or Y for a month, but why not even a week investigation trip? Heck, in between bonus miles for airlines, specials from air bnb, coupons, and frugal shopping, you could easily take a week vacation. Maybe I am just cynical.

Well I didn't even last a year back home before I went travelling again. This trip (to Barcelona) was planned about 4 weeks before I touched down at El Prat airport (the China trip in '13 too 8 months of preparation lol).

There are loads of people here who are being happier abroad without actually having much money. If you don't have money you have TIME and you can use that time to cook and eat for very little, or source a place to live for half of what I'm paying (grrrr).

After that there are loads of ways of making money in another country. I've met a masseuse, a jobbing actor, plenty of bar workers and of course teachers, entrepreneurs, subway train buskers, street entertainers, beach sand sculptors, drug dealers, umbrella sellers, house sitters, au pairs, beer sellers (after the bars close), scam artists, and then there's the army of people who make a living by finding stuff in the recycling skips that all the roads have here.

So what are you all waiting for?

If you live at home rent free, STAY PUT! Even if your parents milk you for a few dollars every so often it's cheaper than rent just about anywhere else.

To make more money I needed a car, it was cheaper to buy new because I had nearly no cash. I am going to re-fi my car and save a ton of money on the interest but if you can get on without a car and still get to work then that's a plus.

Outside of that.

I don't pay for my cellphone or data plan, I don't pay for high speed internet or cable TV. That is a savings of nearly $200 a month right there. I enjoy all three BTW...

Think outside of the box. If you can alternate arms unlike me you can donate Plasma indefinitely. I recently had to stop because scar tissue build up, but I may be able to return in a few more months.

I made over $5,000 in donations over a 2.5 year period.

That alone is enough to be able to travel anywhere.

Josh who runs the Brazilian Gringo blog who I met while he was visiting his parents and grand mother back in the US (lives in Brazil Full Time) was able to travel back home for his grand mother's 90th birthday for a little more than just the taxes and airline fees, about $200.

If you don't qualify for EBT, use the Aeromexico card for all your food purchases. You also might be able to buy gift cards and use them to pay other bills like rent or auto insurance.

All these things add up. With the Aero Mexico Card you get 5,000 bonus miles and a voucher for a $99 R/T ticket to anywhere in Mexico.

If your credit is fairly good (660-670) then look at some of the really good travel awards cards with bonus offers. Chase Freedom seems to be the most popular now. If your score is around 650-660 you can get some of the airline cards like United or American.

I made the decision to improve my credit because it was fairly inexpensive to do and the only way it seems I am going to be able to resume traveling is to offset the cost of air tickets with airline miles.

I also make more money since I have returned to working, I can save about $500-$600 a month though I am in a cycle I need to spend that money but that should be over by June.

There are more than one way to skin a cat, if you can't build your income to such levels to make your life worry-free. You might want to consider improving your credit and building a solid credit file. It hasn't cost me more than just getting a couple of secure cards for a total of $300 with a total of $510 credit limit. With the Capital One card, I am automatically enrolled in Credit Steps. I should get a CLI (Credit Line Increase) in June, how much is unknown. Right now $100 is completely unsecured, that part will increase in June.

My other card doesn't do that but it has a low APR (just don't carry a balance if that's a problem) but is easy to get (no credit check or income requirement) and no annual fee. It also has the EMV chip in it and you can use it overseas without any foreign transaction fees.

You make a good point on that. For Latin America Spirit's Card seems awesome. FOr even signing up you get 15,000 bonus miles.I am thinking of using that for a Colombia trip. Good tip.

I came to Germany on fewer than €1500 and landed a job that I will make €50-60k this year at least. I also now have full medical and dental insurance and 35 paid days off.

Why continue this poor mans mentality?

Because our rulers want the little haves and mostly have not's. My family used to travel all over and I mean all over but as of late has really changed the getting about why ? it has become a hassle and very expensive.

It is hard for me to go abroad, and I honestly can't go for more than a week or so (9 days), but I am working towards doing more. My point is not so much about finding a companion (since that is checked off my list), it is more to find places to expatriate, do business, and get the hell out of dodge to. Perhaps my motivations are a bit different than most on here, but my whole point is to perhaps do business abroad and escape the police & nanny state the US has become.

I don't know how much of a benefit travel miles & travel credit cards are anymore. I already have a United Mileage Plus Visa card, but United has raised the number of miles needed for a free ticket so much that it's almost impossible to use your miles for free travel. Also, the last time I flew on United, it was such an awful experience that I wouldn't want to travel with them again anyways. I'm probably going to cancel it when it comes up for renewal in the next couple of months.

I think you're probably better off just using a card that gives good cash back bonus awards, and then use that cash to help pay for your airline ticket. Some cards are giving up to 5% cash back on certain kinds of purchases.

The Aeromexico card looks like it has some good perks, and flights to Mexico aren't that far from where I am in California, so I might switch to that one if I start to travel to Mexico. Never flown them before though; I hope they're better than the American-based carriers.
