If prices are disproportionately high compared to other products, then farmers will rush into the coconut tree business. The problem is, it takes a while to grow a tree enough to get a harvest doesn't it? Can they graft something onto another palm tree to get it to produce coconuts.

If enough people rush into the coconut business, supply goes up and the prices may go down. But demand may still be growing in the west.

Yeah..It takes 15 years to reach maturity for coconuts so ..our grandfather, parents must grow the tree before their children can reap the rewards. Coconuts are a fair game, there are 100s of uses but some greedy pigs in Philippines wants to convert even that into GM coconut for faster production.

If you're a tourist you are obviously easy prey, and easily fooled. Maybe if you are a seasoned backpacker you will know the acceptable prices better and be tricked less easily. If you are a foreigner living inside the Philippines, it's not so difficult to deal with vendors; you just gotta know the prices, insist on a reasonable price and have some balls in dealing with the vultures.

Mhh not necessarily, if said westerner's time is worth $50+ an hour, it makes sense for him to just pay up and move on instead of haggling. Or just shop elsewhere, but that takes time too.

The haggling exercise some of the travel shows present is absurd. Haggling a trinket from a kid that's making a couple bucks a day is ridiculous.
I'm not saying I pay up all the time but gotta have some discretion. the first thing I learned in Vn were the numbers and "how much?" so i can negotiate a little bit. More than haggling, it's important not to agree to a purchase or service without knowing the price first, otherwise people may just pull out a random number later.

Around here in US where I live, I went to a muffler shop, and got a muffler welded on my car. I bought the muffler already for about $70, and calling the guy on the phone, telling him I had a rusted pipe, etc, he said it would be about $50, but to bring it down. He gets it on the lift, says I didn't tell them about the rusted pipe on the phone, though I did, and threw out like $300-400 and $500-600 for pricing, then going down. I kept telling him no. I told him the max I had was $75, and that's it. Told him if he can't do it for that, take my car off the lift and I'll drive home. He finally does it for $75. Talks shit to me the whole time I was in his shop waiting. But I got it done for $75, In hindsight, $75 probably was a bit low for that job. But he had mechanics that he paid min wage but needed their own tools. Great stellar guy.

Couple years later, I see a lady at my apartment complex with a newer Nissan Versa. I see her muffler is melting her bumper, they didn't cut out the bumper to make the muffler fit, bought the wrong one, did something wrong, so that now the exhaust pipe was sitting right at the bumper cover melting it. I waved at the lady through the window and said "hey you know your muffler is melting your bumper, right?" She came out of her car and took a look. She apparently paid $1000 for this job to be done, at the same exact shop I got mine done for $75. Said she noticed the vibration, but thought it was normal, and she'd just paid $1000 to get it done, after all.

This stellar guy running this shop apparently also wasn't paying his parts bills, as told to me by a guy running the auto parts shop nearest to me. So if you can scam them, scam them.

I dunno, a dollar for a coconut that costs $2-3 in USA (young coconuts are often $8-10) doesn't sound too egregious compared to US scams at all. Shit man, how about beer at baseball games costing $8 here? Been to a US airport? Everything costing double or triple the street price for basically everything. $20 USB cables that cost a dollar at Dollar Tree. One thing I liked in Taiwan was that strangely, the airport 7-11, vending machines, etc, and train station ones, cost basically the same or the exact same as normal ones did in the rest of the city. Pretty shocking coming from the US price gouging when you can culture. Vietnam I had only two straight out scam scams, and thankfully my girlfriend prevented me from seriously overpaying for anything. One was a phone card was sold to my girlfriend for me with no data, I notice he pulled it from the bottom of his pile. Special pile just for me. Another, a taxi in Vietnam just got lost and I had to pay 70K VND (like $3) for ending up a kilometer or so from our destination. In comparison in Taiwan, my second taxi ride to the airport, the meter ran to 1100 or 1200ntd, and the guy insisted on only taking 1000ntd for the trip.

How the hell is coconut and fish expensive in the philippines ..It defies all economic laws, natural law and human law.

Philippines is the second largest producer of coconut in the world but if you ask for fresh coconut from road side vendor in Manila...He asks for freaking 50 Pesos...I saw a video yesterday, where a tourist goes to a vendor and asks for a coconut and she says 60 Pesos sir...he counteracts with 50 ..she says...60...

and that's in middle of an island surrounded by coconut trees..I'm from the state in India, where we grow coconut, highest in India and you can buy fresh coconut for 10 Pesos and if you got to cities like mumbai, bangalore the price jumps to 15 to 20 pesos.

But, If you buy Apple, Date palm, berries..It will be expensive in my state, because we don't grow it here but in Philipines not only Apple is expensive but Coconut as well..

Bangus...Milk Fish..National Fish of Philippines is 10 times more expensive than in India.

Abundant Fish like Mackerel, sardines are also expensive plus you never ever get it fresh...all soaked in Ammonia or Formalin ...used for preserving dead bodies...

That's true. You can get better deals on food in larger cities. There are more vendors selling the same products so prices are lower.

Ironically, the cheapest meat to eat is usually roast chicken (lechon manok) not fish.

There are 250 families in the Philippines that own all the major industries and artificially control the price of agricultural commodities. That said, island countries typically have higher food prices because they have to import most things.

The scams in America and the west is Subtle and Polished, in Asian countries its in your face. Like in Germany they tax you 53% of your income in the name of Medical insurance etc, but what they won't tell you is that, there is a six month wait in Germany to get Specialist Doctor Appointment, most Germans in their 60s, 70s just die waiting for doc appointment.

In the west, and Japan..The Taxi rates are already Over Priced....No need to be scammed, its already right in the meter itself...

I found hotels for 250 rupees $5 in Bangalore, just a 12 min walk to a major shopping area. Beds for $1. Hotels elsewhere for $3.

But one time a guy was adamant that he was going to rip me off. He charged me for 4 waters, 10 rupees each. So i got ripped off for 40 rupees. I had a time restriction and the guy was young and looked unstable, so i just paid the 70 cents.

Anyway, i also found the PI to be overpriced. The rich aristocracy deliberately rips off and takes advantage of the lower classes and the entire country.

India is very cheap, if you look into comparison data. Indian cities are by far the cheapest in the world.

There are scams but if you a foreigner with USD, you ain't gonna get scammed much than say few dollars more, because things are usually dead cheap in India.

Also, the fish is expensive in Philippines...I think people can do is to lower the price of fish, but even island fish in places like Puetro Gallera are expensive...everything starts with 100 pesos..there is no 20 pesos fish...

There is a big picture though..because the jews have insanely raised the price of electricity in Philippines, while in India, its the cheapest ..Not many know..but in India...We only have to pay electric bills Bi-Monthly

In Thailand, coconuts are also 30-40 baht, or 50-60 pesos, despite the fact that Thailand is just inundated by coconut trees.
But in the countryside, I just picked them off the tree for free.

In India, I ate at a university campus buffet for only 20 rupees (breakfast) or 30 rupees (lunch). Stayed at a local hostel for 150 rupees per night. One cup of sugarcane juice for 5 rupees.

If you're coming from India, the Philippines will seem expensive. But if you're coming from North America, Europe, or Australia, the Philippines will still seem very cheap.

America is addicted to regulation, from both "liberal" and "conservative" sides. From what I gather someone from the 1800's would find the country's mindset completely unrecognizable. Bad part is some countries are copying this as well, as they try to 'modernize'.
