I think they are already here in the form of not being able to do everything one wishes to do unless they had a good credit score. More and more things require good credit, including getting many jobs (employers often can check people's credit scores nowadays). So I think we already have a modern form of debtors' prison.

I thought that these were unconstitutional?

Then again, the American constitution is generally ignored nowadays.

They get around it by saying they're tossing you in prison for not showing up/following the orders, as opposed to simply owing the money.
