Ok, perhaps I'm not being fair in my categorizations here. Yes, he's prosperous in the sense that for the most part, he doesn't have to worry about living in the streets, even if he goes X number of years w/o a job. A lot of that comes from being a single guy with a good consulting career w/o the overhead of raising a family and living a reasonable lifestyle. And yes, knowing that if one gets "sacked", that one can sustain one's well being for years, is a lot different than knowing that he'll be borrowing to pay rent/mortgage within a year's time like most others out there.Ghost wrote:You first mentioned the word prosper, so I got the impression he was doing much better.Plus, where's this so-called prosperity?
In addition, the cost of alcohol is not that exuberant. I remember his flask of Gin, which he periodically carries around. When he's w/o paid work, he sips it and then, can reduce the number of Martinis from let's say 5 to 2 and still get hammered while being out with friends. He's quite efficient in that way.
So he's not prosperous in the way that he can live it up like a Tony Starks (of Iron Man) and throw mega-parties for all the A-listers in the New England/New York regions. He just knows how to use his resources efficiently.
I'd imagine that in more primitive times, a man would be more a naturalist than let's say, a computer scientist. And thus, he'd be studying wildlife and the various natural cycles out there, not too distinct from let's say a Grizzly Adams or a Johnnie Appleseed of our own American history.Ghost wrote:It strikes me that because the West has hobbies and distractions (computers/internet, video games, TV, movies, junk food, p**n, etc.) millions of men don't hang themselves. Imagine a primitive society in which you have no real social connection. it would be difficult to avoid suicide. The West takes away a place in society for men while feeding us distractions. That distraction could be a video game, job, or even hobby.
I know what you mean about guys feeling special despite being anything but, however there is truth to that. It's so special to be alive, to have friends, to have love that some of us are willing to leave our country of origin in order to get them. And we do it because those things are precious, valuable, special. It isn't supposed to be out of arrogance, but out of a recognition of what is sacred.
The thing is that ppl need to find that. In a way, our propaganda machine is constructed so that a man is only seen as valuable, when he's in association with a woman. I can tell you one thing, since Mel and I have been together as a couple, ppl have rolled out the red carpet for us. We get the best tables at most restaurants and whenever I'm out alone, waitresses try to hit on me. It's like my association with a woman has made me into some sort of societal George Clooney because I'm inaccessible, in demand, and with a white collar career. When I was a regular guy earlier, I was never treated like royalty.
