The End of the Bar Era in the PH

Post by ladislav »

The End of an Era

Since about 2009/10, the physical attractiveness of the entertainers working in the Philippines has gone down significantly. They are now much older, much less cute and also, much less slim. The establishments are taking in anyone who is a female.

Gone are the days of the sweet college-student-like ladies.

These factors are to blame:

The Internet. These cute girls can now get BF's, clients and sugar- daddies on the many sites and apps online. No need to physically dance in all those bars. Also, they can do "exotic shows" online without the actual need to be in any physical contact with the man. While it is illegal in the PH, it's hard to prosecute if a proxy/VPN is used.

The end of the "rice paddy recruitment" of girls and then, the passing of many new anti-trafficking laws. Bar managers can no longer go to small villages and bring new country girls to the city from there. Many were fooled with offers of "waitress jobs", anyway.

The Korean "invasion" and the slow departure/extinction of the "Joe". The cute ones are now on the Korean payroll. The white man is being replaced by a Korean in the romance scene. The girls are moving from go go bars to KTV's. Korean Only.

Too many raids connected with ladies who faked their age and caused arrests of the owners, closure of bars and scandal after scandal. Now, to make sure the lady is legal, many establishments hire those who look 25- 35. Instead of the former 18-23.

The general improvement in the economy.

As a result, the PH bar scene no longer provides the same experience of one meeting cute, young, college-age adults. It is now largely not very pretty single mothers in the 25-35 category.

Is it bad news? Yes and no. There is still female company in there, and you can go and drink and talk to the ladies. It's just that they won't steal your heart anymore unless you are into 33 + year old mothers of three.

But since now there are all these apps and websites, they are waiting for you on those. Just make sure you let them know you are in the country.
A brain is a terrible thing to wash!

One more thing to mention about the Korean and Chinese who turn up to red light districts across the Philippines: they're usually the nerdy types, who are not interested in the preliminaries: the drinking and eating, the flirting with different girls, the raunchy camaraderie with your fellow foreigners sitting around you, etc.

All these guys want to is book the girl in advance, endure the bare minimum of entertainment needed, and take them back to their apartments.

A couple of years ago my wife and I booked a Christmas break at a place near Puerto Galera, calles Sabang. The beach was awful, typical strip of abusive resorts pouring wastage into the sea. Anyway little did we know that Sabang was also a notorious red light spot, with a majority of punters being Chinese, Taiwanese or Korean on a scuba diving + girl package.

One night I convinced C to step into one of the better-looking girlie bars, just "for the experience". The experience was shockingly disappointing. It was barely 7:30 in the evening and all the girls were already tucked in a corner, each and every one holding hand or sitting on the lap of their nerdy Chinese/Korean of choice. I remember seeing very few, if any, beer bottles around them.

The few dancing/cabaret performances were given by a bunch of ladyboys in fancy costumes, maybe one or two girls (probably hired entertainers, not barfineable). Tolerable stuff, but nothing special at all.

We were expecting things getting hotter as the evening gave way to the night, but we were sorely disappointed. At 9:30 sharp, everybody bowed and said the show was over. We were all kindly escorted out after paying our bills, as the venue would be closing. And this was a Friday night!

Some of the more traditional bar girl action might still survive in Angeles City, or maybe Burgos street in Makati. Yet, it looks painfully obvious to me that the type of clientele may have changed the scene completely: no more Western foreigners looking to have a few drinks and goliardic fun before choosing their cuties for the night. Only nerdy Asians who just want to cut it to the chase and book the girl well in advance.
