Rise of Fascism in Europe

Post by zacb »

I was just thinking the other day about the pligh tof the Greecian people. And the I was reading how the Golden Dawn Party got 7% of the vote, at 50% of the police vote. And with the history of coups in Greece, along with a startling similarities between this and the 30's , I am wondering if there could be a new rise of neo-nazis in europe? Any thoughts?

It's a very complex issue, Zacb. Nationalism in Europe has often come out of a genuine popular dissent against an unbearable political or economical situation. Germany and Austria in the 30s had been severely battered by the financial crisis started in the US with the Great Depression, and lots of impoverished lower and middle class people had something to cheer about the uber-socialist policy of Hitler's party. Once bankers and industrialists in Germany and the US saw the potential to reshape the face of post-Prussian Germany and Europe in general, they jumped on the bandwagon and helped Hilter rise to power as a de-facto new Bismarck and prepare for war.

Greece's insurgence of nationalism is not dissimilar to that of Germany's Weimar Republic. However the main difference is that Golden Dawn have no charismatic leader and, most importantly, no support from financial and corporate elites to scale up to any politically significant extent. The reason for that is quite clear: financial powers to be are all fully committed to immolating Greece on the altar of speculative capitalism. No banking group will to fail on their junk Greek bonds and other debt derivatives. European Central Bank, the IMF and the Fed are all accomplices to their agenda of forcing Greece sell out its assets, wealth dignity for the privilege of continuing to be strangled by that failed project called the Euro.

I can see Greek people's discontent is well placed and justified, including some of extreme folklore: Merkel photoshopped as a Nazi officer, burning German flags, the rise of Golden Dawn party etc. Unfortunately no popular uprise, ever in history, has been allowed to grow into a significant agent of change without concrete (= financial) support from a powerful lobby. So, my opinion, nothing will happen to Greek people but their further descent in the downward spiral of debt, decline and political bullying from the Euro bureaucrats.

You should be more concerned witht the rise of fascism and leftwing extremism in places like the usa and uk. Where a neo colinialist attitude still persists. As well as a determined effort to undermine male influence and masculinity. These are matriarchal imperialist states that do not value free speech, family, children or men at all. The usa in particular ranks literally at the bottom in regards to child welfair and quality of lofe. In addition to being blatantly unequal economically.

That is true. Although it is interesting with the police , which could prove interesting. Also, in an article on the subject, they mentioned they had the support of the mob. Also, if Greece screw them over, they could use a "dictator" scenario to get involved there if austerity doea not go as planned. But for now, I think the EU and the bankers are in control, although if things persist too long, thwre could be a revolt, which could maybe be spun positivley foe the bankers. Just thinking.

As Greece and the Golden Dawn party were mentioned, I assumed the OP referred to the kind of "genuine" nationalism that rises from the people and struggles to be heard (and sadly rarely does). The kind of "fascism" you are talking about is a form of "benign authoritarianism" that is being subtly imposed on countries with a relatively stable political situation and social fabric. The UK are perfect for this kind of agenda. You have been subjected to your monarchy for countless centuries. Now your rulers are called the media, the police, big government, nanny state, etc. Many British people may well have the best political discourse in Europe and highly critical minds, yet they are the least likely to embrace a hunting rifle and take on Westminster. Plus the government knows how to push all the right buttons to annihilate, or threaten to annihilate any honest citizen's life only for expressing dissent, or minor victimless "crimes". Look at the way the issue of rocket launchers on East London rooftops (= military grade security for Olympic sites) was dealt with. As soon as those protesters were faced with the idea of receiving a criminal record, which here amounts to being socially nuked and outcast forever, they had to retreat and keep quiet again. Another guy was accused of possessing one item of child porn, which was found to be a version of the £450K London 2012 logo recoloured to make it look like Lisa Simpson giving some head to an adult. We are indeed shifting back to Victorian times, where anything that deviates from conformity to what's common and decent to a faceless "majority" (easily coinciding with the world view of a bunch of senior judges) is indeed treated as a crime.

I think there is a different between fascism and nationalism. Ukip is and example of the latter, Golden Dawn of the first. I actually disagree with both for the most part, but let's not confuse and demonize the genuine for fakes.

I give it another 20 years or so before we start to see far-right nationalist parties take over some of the smaller European countries. Greece and some of the other smaller southern and eastern European nations will be the first ones. Economic strain from the EU, the deteriorating welfare state, muslim immigration, it's only a matter of time now.

That is what I see to. I think that although it won't take over any time soon there, I think Spain could be a suprise and have some volatility pretty soon. Perhaps they won't have oppressive right wing governments, but they will have some political trouble. Greece will probably be one of the first to adopt right wing policies (since their history is riddle with it). For Greece, it will probably be another 5-10 years before they are a major opposition force, and another 5 years they will assume leadership (this is assuming current policies and political climates stay the same, as well as stays the same economically). You can already see the seed of a right wing takeoever in progress in Hungary. And while I don't think every right wing government is per se Brownshirts just because they are against immigration, I think they are forerunners of what is to come.
