Why do many pubs play music so loud?

Why do many pubs play music so loud?

Post by mattyman »

I don't understand why so many pubs play music at nightclub-level volumes even though there's nowhere for people to dance. It seems stupid. Is this deliberately to discourage conversation, encourage more and faster drinking, or even to DISCOURAGE people who just want to go out and socialise as opposed to getting drunk?

I find a lot of bars in my town these days are completely dead up until 11pm or so, and all that comes in are waves of people just coming in to top up, who've already been drinking at home.

People who do want to go out and socialise (not get as drunk as they can) are put-off because they feel discouraged by all the drunk people, of which too many town centres become the sole domain of. The get-drunk quick crowd, by their behaviour puts off other segments of society. Too many bars catering exlusively to that segment puts other's off.

A lot of places don't give a shit about the impact of whether what they're trying to cater for is degrading the vibrancy. To me, VIBRANT means CHOICE. Vibrant means something for everyone, vibrant means town centres that attract a wide range of people, not just the binge-drinking, get drunk quick crowd.

Whats' ironic is that a lot of people say they can't aford to go out, but when they do, it means getting wasted. To a lot of people here 'going out' means 'getting wasted', as opposed to simply socialising. This is the norm in many towns in the UK, unless you're in an area with a yuppie element to the population.

America does not have a good drinking culture. That's just how it is here. American bars aren't like bars in Spain or Greece.
Let's get together and feel alright.
