Do you feel an empty, depressing, meaningless dark vibe in America?

Post by Winston »

Have any of you noticed that despite the clean streets and air around you in America, that it has a depressing, empty and meaningless vibe that deflates you? It's like something creates an angst in you that makes you feel like you are worthless and life is meaningless. You ever notice that?

Something in the environment and people seems to create it, or perhaps it's due to some vortex from the consciousness of the land. I'm sure that the soulless dull bland non-creative architecture of the suburbs plays a role in this too.

It's a double whammy when combined with the feeling of disconnectedness inherent in the social atmosphere and environment around you. What's worse, there is an aura of FEAR and PARANOIA in the masses around you as well. It's a very sick, depressing and sad environment for sure.

Immigrants who come to America must feel conflicted: On the one hand they appreciate the comforts, clean streets and air, and consumer choices in America. But on the other, they feel this inherent emptiness, soullessness and social disconnectedness, as well as this depressing deflating vibe that tells them that life is meaningless and worthless. Yet in spite of this, they must act positive all the time or else pretend to be. This must be confusing and causes them to wonder if it's all worth it or not, especially when they realize that life in America isn't as great as they imagined.

On top of that, internal suffering is magnified in America because:

1) You live in a perpetual state of wanting, needing and dissatisfaction.
2) The society around you keeps pushing you to overwork and overconsume, as if that's all that matters and all you're good for. Work more, consume more! Don't stop! It's good for the economy, blah blah.

I know this is true to an extent everywhere, but it's magnified to the extreme in America. And coupled with the inherent sense of isolation, disconnectedness and the depressing/deflating vibe, makes it all the more worse.

Any of you notice all this? It's one of those things you feel deep down but isn't easy to put into words, especially when no one else dares to openly say such things, as there is a loser stigma attached to it. Instead, you are expected to put up a facade and deny your suffering.

I have no idea, but I think it's thanks to the way American cities are built (mega-suburban sprawls where cars are absolutely necessary in order to go from point A to point B), with that in mind, the streets are empty, no one outside, no human contact except for work, the only people u see are inside cars.

The only place to have human contact is the shopping mall, and they're all the same, same stores, same people, same vibe telling u to consume.

add to all that the suspicious, everyone's out to get me, they're all terrorist and from a different race type of mentalty that thrives in the masses....

I have noticed it too.... americans are very angry.... sometimes too angry!!!

America is dysfunctional....

I agree, Winston. It's because the United States is an unhappy country filled with angry, overworked and overstressed Americans trying to out-compete one another, anyway possible. There is no unity and togetherness here--everyone is out for themselves. People would do anything to get ahead in this country--even step over their own parents, if they could...

The racism here is all behind closed doors, but you can definitely feel the racial tension in the air...And Americans are very close-minded and unfriendly for the most part, except in some parts of the country, i.e. the South, Midwest....

My last trip to South America, for the most part, I noticed the people were ridiculously happy, despite living in a 2nd world country. (Exceptions being the women over age 40.)

Can you believe it? The majority of non-Western people being happy just to be happy? For no particular reason. Just smiling, giddy and living their lives.

I agree with Zboy above, but I will also add it is the Matriarchal-ghetto values. The USA has become a prison culture.

You ever watch those programs where everyone acts big, bad and tough? Newbies target the biggest inmates they can for a confrontation so they can prove how tough they are? I have seen that in workplaces here, where the new supervisor starts the job with guns blazing.

No one trusts one another. There are snitches and bullies, and there is adoration and love for everything evil and bad, especially the women love ex-convicts, drug dealers, gangmembers, bikers, et al.

At least in other cultures the women are literally sick of the bad men.

I asked this same question in our Facebook group, and someone responded:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/86597977757/
Dan Kummer Yea pretty much. The main thing I noticed when i traveled outside of the USA was that people didnt seem as angry. People in the US are always angry. It's kind of weird. The whole culture is about being kind of stand off'ish, and the continual attempt to try and climb higher socially.
So true huh?

Didn't notice it growing up but after I spent some time outside US, going back feels like going back to a cage after experiencing freedom. I still hold citizenship but no way will I live again in the US unless everywhere else becomes a wasteland.

I much prefer Mexico and Philippines as it caters more to my extroverted personality and latino soul and tastes.

Having only lived in New York City, can't speak for the entire country, but for me NYC has somewhat of a dulling effect. It's very hard to be happy here, something is always missing, but I've never been very unhappy here either. In other countries, you are more alive, you feel things more acutely, both good and bad, you can be very happy but also can get depressed. But upon arriving to NYC, you immediately become busy, don't feel as alive anymore...this also prevents extreme unhappiness: you just go around, endlessly do what you have to do, and forget about everything else. Life just goes by, but you feel like something is missing most of the time.
Unlike other US cities, there are lots of people on the streets. Most of the time, however, you don't speak to them, especially to women. The whole environment makes it hard to feel at ease when speaking to strangers, and it's even hard to make conversation when someone does speak to you once in a blue moon...women on the street don't look at you and don't see you, unless they want some monetary gain (collecting for charities, etc). If you look at them, they pretend you don't exist. And anger factor is present everywhere, especially on trains.
There are some fun/open things happening in the city, but the environment makes it hard to feel at ease participating in them.

I am not depressed at all, mildly concerned but maybe not for the reasons you think.

I am mostly concerned about when Americans get sick and tired of being sick and tired + all the guns in America (especially automatic weapons) means there is going to be a violent response especially if the police continues their brutal crackdowns. Unlike in other countries, the police haven't killed anybody yet but when they do, its on and crackin trust me.

Nothing I wanna see and nothing I want my future children to see.

There will be a delayed response though because the brunt of all the economic problems or what Chris Hedges calls Sacrifice Zones are located in the Rust Belt and former industrial towns like Camden, NJ. Whatever violence/crackdown happens will will start on disenfranchised Whites as cracking down on Blacks as seen by the police crack down on the Oakland Occupy movement is normal to us, but that level of violence is new too Whites or as Ice Cube said "If you're White you can trust the police".

I find where we are in world history extremely interesting, because we will perish fairly quickly as even in a nuclear attack there will be survivors.

Limiting people to living in the Southern Hemisphere only.

Or as we are now, slowly killing our ecosystem where things will get progressively worse and if you look at the futures market, you'll see one of the most popular futures is water. Many analyst say water will be more valuable than oil in the very near future.

Who is going to suffer the most? Those who are poor and can't leave....

Also what else is interesting is the realization that we're in a jobless recovery.

I don't hate it, I hate its dysfunction.

The problem with NYC is its a perfect example of how unfair the tax code is and how the Congress is completely co-op. The housing issue is so bad in the city they are considering Mico Apartments - http://www.businessinsider.com/micro-apartments-2013-6

There still a racial problem in NYC because of stop and frisk, when Wall St. largely goes unchecked.

I find these things interesting, not depressing at all. I am far more interested in what individuals do than what dysfunctional Governments do.

I think that America (and other countries) are in decline. The problem currently is that the current economic crisis is engineered to move wealth from the middle classes to the wealthy/rich. America is an interesting country which until 50+ years ago wowed the world with small-business creation and industry with the Barons of the old.

Socially, it has been divided on culture, race, ethnic group. I am not sure if ever Americans have been truly happy but standard of living was good until the 1970s when you had more people lose factory jobs and more wealth disparity between the classes.

I do not think it is depressing in a sense. The country has people who accept things rather easily and do not think it is odd that being afraid of interacting with other people is uncommon in other countries.

The country is going through a 'jobless recovery'. No real jobs are created you have some bubbles around the country in some areas. The Capital region is mainly being funded through govt money so you have contract work and other businesses not being affected by the depression-era economy happening in many parts of the country.

Lastly, Americans are angry. Unfortunately, I can see that most people are not authentic and it has affected me too. Even when traveling recently (last few months) people were wondering why I look like I am upset.

Hopefully when the government looses its bearings (currency infrastructure) I am away living somewhere else.

How are you bored in Vegas? Get a wing buddy and go approach the women in the casinos, nightclubs, restaurants and pool parties on the Strip.

The women in Vegas are probably the most approachable in America, since most are on vacation. Some of the best gentlemen's clubs in the country. Nightlife every single night. Casinos where you can drink for free. A lot of waitresses and bartenders you can approach.

I saw a Chinese guy on Youtube you approached women in Philadelphia. Having a video camera helps A LOT. Women who are on camera are far less likely to be rude. Then you can subtly flirt and if the response is positive, you can ask them for a phone number or facebook or something.

Good strategy if you are in the mood to approach 4000 women.

Couldn't have been a better topic, this place called America is Batsh!t crazy. Somedays I'm up, somedays I'm down. I look at the facial expressions on some of the people when I go into a Metropolitan City and its like they have no soul! The women look so stoned faced. Most of the people in America are always B!tchy especially the female population. They may as well crawl in and out of their cars and town homes on all fours. The level of B!tchness is through the moon. You look over and some of them are in mid-eye roll, for no apparent reason. Alot of men eyeball like their sizing you up. I don't know, I've met alot of people from other Countries and they confirm the b!tchness of most Americans. Its like being depressed all the time is normal. Worrying about status, paying for sh!t you don't need, trying to impress people that do not give a flying 747 Fack about you! Having your head up your @$$ all the time has become a normal trend, and personally, I'm sick of this sh!t. I treat moving abroad like I treat a job I'm sick of. When you get tired of working at a job, you find a better one, I'm tired of America, so I need to find a better Country!

LOL I don't know where you get your delusions from, but no honest no-nonsense person here would agree with that. Come here and be my wingman, and you'll be in for a rude awakening. When it hits you, may will be very deflated to find out how it really is here. No credible serious source claims that Vegas women are approachable or relaxed or easy to chat up. lol. You come here and try it. lol. I've been here many times so even I knew the truth long ago.

Ask anyone who lives here, and they will always say that they hate living here. I don't know why. There's something about the environment here that is soul sucking and energy zapping, besides the desert sucking you dry of water too. Sleeping here isn't even rejuvenating. I wake up every morning with dry mouth, dry eyes, and groggy head, as if my sleep wasn't smooth.

Btw, I'm not depressed myself. But I definitely feel the depressed energy vibe of the environment constantly TRYING to make me feel depressed. Its attempts and pressure can be felt. I don't give in to it, but I can feel it trying.
