I'm at work so unable to watch the video at the moment but I'm interested by the title. What's this about?

The future is now - or so it seems. @perrikaryal is a gamer, Twitch streamer, psychology graduate and a genius with the ability to control games...with her mind! She has mastered the art of doing this with games like Elden Ring, Halo and TrackMania all without using a controller. To do this she uses an EEG (electroencephalogram) that picks up her brain activity, which then translates into pushing buttons on a virtual controller.

Wow! It sounds like something from science fiction. I wonder if this type of technology could be applied to things that are actually useful though. What do you think? People could theoretically do their work from home via mind control lolgalii wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 1:05 pmPixel--Dude wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 12:55 pmI'm at work so unable to watch the video at the moment but I'm interested by the title. It's not new technology. Research on these types of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have been common fare in the academia for the past 20 years at least. It's established that specific thoughts or mental processes activate different areas of the brain in different measures.Pixel--Dude wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 2:20 pmWow! Think of our brain as a massive manufacturing facility, with different areas akin to production zones hosting different kinds of specialised machinery. If this facility had windows and their workers did night shifts, depending on what manufacturing activity is going on - e.g. what pieces are being designed and built - then, after enough observation, one might be able to understand what piece might be under construction just by looking at what windows are lit and what kind of light they emanate (e.g. a bright flickering light might suggest some high-current arc welding happening).
It's the same thing in this case. Most individuals will be very reluctant to have their skulls cut about, so probes may be placed in the most precise locations to measure activation, so we need to observe and guess activity from "the windows", e.g. by placing probes on top of the skull or on the temples. The skull has a tremendous smearing effect, so activation potentials become extremely hard to detect and interpret. Luckily, researchers have always been using state of the art source separation techniques and, more recently, AI.
What this boils down to: after User has gone through a brief training sequence and the head device calibrated, they are asked to produce simple mental processes, like imagining a 3D figure being manipulated (e.g. a mind Rubik Cube ), or walking, or talking to someone in front of them. These activities might seem totally uncorrelated, and that is precisely the purpose: they activate different areas of the brain and may be interpreted unambiguously.
Every process is converted into a simple command, e.g. go left, go right, advance, shoot. After User familiarises with the unusual thought-action pattern, they usually become quite apt at controlling a videogame character.

Imagine controlling the tesla bots or the boston dynamics bots just with your brain activities. It is interesting that still humans are used in the war nowadays.Pixel--Dude wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2023, 2:20 pmWow! It sounds like something from science fiction.
