American schools are fast becoming exactly like prisons, especially with their draconian rules.
More and more schools are handing out detentions for hugging other classmates. They don't care if a student's favorite uncle died; and many of those schools even hand out detentions for being sad in class because their favorite uncle died and nobody will comfort them. It's like grieving is a capital felony under Federal law according to those schools. In other words, the American school system is designed to toughen students up and remove all feelings of love and destroy students who are weak. Just like a municipality that immediately cuts a tree down that loses a branch in a storm.
There are even reports of a school district in Chicago's west suburb of Berwyn (think J.S. Morton District 201) that goes even farther and forbids their cheerleaders from having any kind of social interactions with guys, something they have reportedly enforced since 1999.
Americans no longer mature past age 12 anymore. And Winston is right; suburbs are very stark, sterile, toxic, soulless, and socially disconnected; suburbia is strictly business only. Even bars are very scarce in suburb areas. It's pretty much all residential, commercial business, and schools in the suburbs.
