Were people/women friendlier in the 80's?

Post by Winston »

Some friends have told me that back in the 80's people and women were friendlier and more open in the US and it was easier to get laid. Even more so back in the 70's.

Is that true? I was a shy nerd back then who was afraid of girls, so I never really tried. But it seems that people were more trusting, relaxed and open from what I could remember. And there were girls at school who chased me around and flirted with me, even if it was just for fun.

Others have told me that it was friendlier back then than it is now, for sure, but still nothing compared to how it is in Europe.

What do you think?

My vote is, yes, they were friendlier in the 80s. Though I was too young to date, I can remember the adults and teenagers in the 80s. I remember even in the late 80s, it wasn't taboo for a girl to say she liked men for this or that. I remember suddenly in the 90s, all the girls in school had to say negative remarks about males. Even if a male had what would have been perceived as a positive trait in the 80s, now that same trait was viewed as noneffective at impressing women, or worse, it even became his failure.

The 80's had way better music and TV shows than the 90's. Miami Vice FTW!

It was a different environment back then. Most people weren't on in the internet or had e-mail, didn't carry blackberries, and fewer people had cell phones. Face to face communication was more common.

I was the sysop of a local 12-line BBS back then and most of our members were local. We meet weekly for pizza and games. Internet access back then was dialing in to a waffle BBS and browsing through usenet. No WWW.

Today I think technology has made people in the same community more distant to each other. We spend more time watching TV or playing video games at home, instead of socializing with people in our area. But the internet also made the world smaller, and allowed us to build interpersonal relationships across the globe.

Back in 1989, meeting online friends on the weekend was going to the local pizza parlor and miniature golf, then off to some house party. Today it's like, hopping on the plane and flying to Singapore to meet with your World of Warcraft guild buddies. @_@

I'd say that in late 80's, it was easier to meet local women. In 2008, it's harder to meet local women, but easier to meet women across town or far away. I see my younger cousins on facebook with tons of friends, and I chat with my female friends on MSN or Skype. They could be across the ocean, but talking to them is just a click away.

They weren't friendlier in the 80's, but they were nicer to look at. There were a lot more fit girls, plus tattoos and body piercings weren't as common. Don't remember the 70's well enough to comment on that decade, though.

I had alot less problem getting girls when I was young, in the 80's, then in the 90's. Not to say I didnt get any at all, but I think getting into my late 20's and the rapid decline in the quality of females after the 80's are contributing factors.

Momopi makes a lot of good points...

Cell phones and online activity wasn't as common, so you did meet people face-to-face.
(By comparison, a year or so back I was on a date with a girl and she was in the middle of a conversation with me, then her cell phone rang and she automatically answered it and started chatting with whoever it was...no 'Excuse me' or "I'll call you later, I'm doing something." I just walked off.)

Also I don't know if it made much difference but Music was much better & more positive...not the "Everything Sucks" refrain that Nirvana created.
There was a better mood all around before the Seattle sound took over.

80s BETTER FOR DATING AND GIRLS.

Post by WorldTraveler »

For those of you that didn't experience this, the 1980s were a MUCH MUCH better.
There are several reasons:
1. Sex Revolution was still active. This ended in w/ explosion of AIDS attention
2. Girls were thiner
3. NO Internet, cell phones or IPODs,
4. Women still wanted men and thought that marriage and a husband were part of having a child.

You could still meet girls at bars or have a date and have sex on the first date.

The AIDS epidemic was the first leg of the downfall of men and women relationships in America. It gave them the first reason not to have sex anymore. Even after AIDS had been controlled, Women's Lib had taken over and created an environment that men were not needed in the equation.

There were more Thin girls. Now the average young girl is overweight. I see many 40 yr old mothers that are thinner and look better than their 17 yr old daughters. Not to mention I went to a social for 25-50s and there was 500 people there. About 40% of the guys we thin. There probably were not but about 15-20 total girls that were thin and pretty. Severe competition for the good ones.

Without Internet, cell phones, and IPODs people had to get out to meet people. All these things became popular in the 1990s or later.

Good points WorldTraveler, might I also add, not many girls in the 80's had tattos or body piercings! Your right, more girls were in shape back then than they are now. I was in high school in the 80's and the snobby attitude that so many American girls have today was not quite as bad back in the 80s. People tell me, women back in the 70's were more open and friendly towards men than they are today. Back then, women would actually FLIRT with men! Gee, how nice, women actually showing interest in men! :D Today, women in America have an angry look on their face (the hot women anyway) because so many guys are hitting on them, that they just get sick of it! I was told that back in the 70's women would smile more and were more friendly and playful towards men. Ah, the good old days, when women actually LIKED MEN and were friendly and nice! :D

Wow. Winston always poses the most relevant questions. This one should be discussed on national TV...but the gays and feminists in the media would stop that from happening.

Yes, in 1986 we saw the beginning of the ongoing alliance between Religious Socons and the bitter 40+ feminists who were no longer wanted for the sex they had so freely given in the 60s when they were in their 20s.

Lying about AIDs was their excuse. Nuclear sexual winter immediately took hold just as I was getting old enough to react favorably to all the 100s of hints women were throwing me about being available for instant sex.

I worked at a hotel reception and women were giving me back their second keys and smiling...and I remember half understanding what they meant...but NOT REACTING! I was too young to follow through. I was an idiot. Just when I realized how not to be an idiot, the reliigious enemies and the feminists struck a lot of happiness down with their media campaign that made women scared of men.

Men have never recovered their reputation since we were all named potential AIDs carriers. The religiious socons still say that AIDs goes through condoms and they still dominate even the Men's Rights forums. Mens News Daily is stuffed to the gills with them.

While the sixties women were still desired or at least preferred (before 1986), they created the perfect culture in the west where women were available to men regardless of whether they were married or had a boyfriend.

It was in their interest to put a stop to things when men their own age would simply prefer to sleep with a 19 year old whose was bored and whose boyfriend was gone for the weekend.

It was men's own fault that we did not create a political pressure group like our enemies did.

But then...we ASSUMED that Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt and the like WERE watching our back.

But as we have seen with VAWA and IMBRA since 2005...the porn kings are both senile and showing their true colors...all they ever wanted was money and some sex for themselves. Their editorial replacements are gays like Bruce David (or David Bruce) at Hustler and feminists like Hugh Hefner's daughter.

With the Monica Lewinsky case, the Republicans fully adopted the Marxist feminist 1980s line that an employer cannot have sex with an employee or a professor with a coed student.

That caused a lot of smart professors to move to Europe or Asia to teach...because what is the point of being a college professor if you cannot have relationships with the gorgeous students who fall in love with you.

Hillary is primarily motivated by bitterness that Bill is no longer sexually attracted to her. I dread what she will do to men's rights to meet foreign women when she becomes Secretary of State. She will probably supplement IMBRA with a slander campaign in other countries telling women not to date American men.

--------------------

That being said...I did much better sexually in 2003 as a middle aged businessman in the Monterey Bay area of California than I had when I was a soldier there in 1984.

When I was a US Soldier at the height of the Sexual Revolution in the 80s, the women at Berkeley and Stanford looked down on my profession and I got nowhere. The daughter of a general was nice to me but considered me below her class. She was looking forward to going to Boston to college. In fact, I have several bitter US Army memories of the best young California and Texas women telling me they dreamed of going to Boston particularly. It was as if I was not there. Some guys who were well beneath me, but going to school in Boston, probably got lucky with them. There was even one middle class gorgeous woman who was a soldier herself...but she seemed to think fellow soldiers were beneath her class.

Before I was a soldier, women on the beach in Florida at least had often been sexually available at a moment's notice..but that was precisely when I was too young to act on it.

The sexual revolution, I believe, went primarily to the benefit of older men with jobs, not to the hippie males. Sadly, I was not to become one of those older males with jobs until later.

I spent most of my adult life in Europe.

In 2003 I was back in the USA (Monterey Bay Area of California) and I used Yahoo and Match.com to hook up with gorgeous women 20 years younger. They were very much into kissing and, if they were Democrats, sex on the third date.

This was such a contrast to the same exact place a generation earlier (these women's moms had been among the twenty something women who were rejecting me in the 80s.

I am still not sure if it was because I looked and talked better after the turn of the century...or if maybe a new generation resumed the sexual revolution

One thing was sure...after 9-11 being a US soldier or US veteran actually DID mean something.
Plaintiffs needed to fight IMBRA and VAWA which legally codify foreign women as little children unable to defend themselves against evil American men

Just my opinion on the subject. Sexual relationship between a professor and his/her current students is not really appropriate. Former students are fair game.

IMO Winston is doing us a favor by giving us a brutally honest version of life in Angeles City, PH. It'd help people to avoid the pitfalls, or at least warm them about it.

Some more questions.

Was it easier to make friends back in the 80's? Did you have to break into cliques too? Was it easier?

I do remember people being more natural in the 80's with less paranoia or hang ups.

Did people know their neighbors in the 80's? I remember that kids out in the neighborhood were easy to meet and play with. But the parents didn't talk to each other much, unless they were the same race maybe. But if you were Asian, white families were not as open with you.

Wow, old thread revived!

Yes, I remember I could make friends way better in the 80s than compared to just a few years later in the 90s. The only drawback to making friends in the 80s is it was the time of the bad-boy leather jacket. LOL I saw this starting out in exactly 1980, no doubt brought on by television. So as a result some boys growing up just had to imitate this from TV... The 70s, now thats when you could make friends!

As for getting girls? I was too young in the 70s, and really even the 80s to give an accurate comparison. I will say however, I did seem to have an occasional girl develop a crush on me once every few years or so as a child in the 80s. Shit, it seems I don't even get that now days. Pretty bad, to do better as a CHILD than a grown man in his prime. f**k, why do women let the world around them affect their thinking so much. . .

I forgot to comment to the rest of the question. I remember in the early and mid 80s, if one kid on my street went swimming, we all went! Lets say my mom wanted to take me swimming at the river. She would stop by EVERY house on our street and ask the kids parents if their kids wanted to go to the river and they always said yes. Also, all of us kids played together much more often, even though many of us wasn't even that close of friends. And now whats here? I even live at the same place and the kids now, hell, I didn't even know there were any for the longest time because they never leave their freakin houses. LOL And no swimming, bike riding, or even tree climbing.

I didn't know any Asians then, but white people were really open to each other as far as neighbors go. Man, our neighbors would just show up and stay till 10:PM watching TV. Most of them did this at least once a week or two.

Obviously you guys are too young to remember a world before Feminism. I'm talking about the decades before the late-1960s and 1970s as Feminism was taking root in the American attitudes.

I can remember women in the late 1950s and early 1960s as being much friendlier than women during the 1970s and thereafter. And it's not just women. Most people of that generation born before World War II, were more open, trusting, friendlier, civil, polite, less selfish and less cynical than people today.
